so yeah I think I - finally - have the streaming server working, after a couple of days of very intense yak shaving. not gonna attempt a real broadcast tonight, but you can see the placeholder content at https://video.northcoastsynthesis.com/ , if your browser is compatible. Okay, so after some hours of messing around, it appears that the piece of software I really need is something called "ffserver". Which was announced to be EOL in mid-2016, and they finally removed from the relevant Git respository on January 6, 2018. Last version before they did that, did not work, and it appears impractical to figure out exactly how far to downgrade ffserver and its many dependencies to get an installation that will really work.

@ninjawedding TeXLive comes with "Universalis ADF," which is not identical to Univers but may be closer than Roboto is.
