@wrenpile It's a mannerism of Dr. Evil, a character in the Austin Powers movies. A famous line has him dramatically demanding $1 million ransom as part of an evil plan, not knowing that after a few decades of inflation (which he'd slept through in suspended animation) it no longer sounded like such an impressive amount as he intended. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l91ISfcuzDw
@tomey Okay, but then wouldn't the number of connections be zero? I'm not sure exactly what counts as a "connection" - it may be that an attempt by someone on another instance to follow a non-federating instance's user gets counted even if no data is transferred because of non-federation. If that's how it works then it could explain a non-zero but unusually small count.
@tomey note the number of connections for that instance is remarkably low for its number of users. Whether bots, astroturfers, or something else, those are clearly not accounts behaving the same way that accounts on other instances do.
And 52% of them are on the three big Japanese instances (pawoo.net, mstdn.jp, friends.nico). That percentage is down from a peak near 54% earlier, but if you throw in all the other Japanese instances (which are most instances, overall), that side of the network remains a large majority of Mastodon and likely a bare majority of the entire "fediverse." https://mstdn.io/media/ROqRZTsUmbaVq5QHXPk
the power button on my new netbook requires Javascript in order to work right. if that isn't grounds for a tri-province killing spree I don't know what is.
Urging unhappy people to Talk is worse than useless while you continue very visibly working to change the world so that they will be ignored and punished all the more. It's no wonder that many choose not to trust you.
@clacke I wonder how China fits into that. Google , Facebook, and Amazon are not dominant there, I can't see them becoming so, and because of population size and increasing wealth, China isn't going away.
"X doesn't justify Y." "You don't believe that X is true? Here, I'll prove it to you!" "It doesn't matter whether X is true because even if true it would not justify Y." "You're refusing to face the fact of X!" "You're deliberately ignoring the real issue of Y!"
@xj9@luka@frankiesaxx of course further distinctions are possible because there are really four kinds imaginable: users silencing users, users silencing instances, instances silencing users, instances silencing instances. Not all of these necessarily have identical consequences.
