@loic@ghost@aral@indie I think that's the irony here. While their business model is extremely hostile to our privacy it is quite friendly to Free Software. While companies with real (software) products might be arguable more privacy friendly but have huge incentives to be more hostile to Free Software.
@loic@ghost@aral@indie and last but not least you have to keep in mind that they are a large consumer of Free Software. They probably use and contribute to Free Software for completely different reasons then most of us do, but you can't deny that they have a interest in good and successful Free Software. It also doesn't interfere with their business model, exactly because they are not a product company.
@ephzero Toaster might be a bad example. But everyone is fine with reading the manual if they buy a new TV, dishwasher, washing machine, etc. Yet they expect that something way more complex, a general purpose computer, will just work? I remember the early days of PC's, you got real manuals with each computer and software and people actually read it. I'm not against good UX and agree that it should be as easy and self explaining as possible. But don't expect the impossible.
@hans_martin@Gargron If you ask me personally, I think it could/should be a different service to some extend. There is a reason that Twitter, G+, Facebook,... exists. It is hard to cover all use cases with one solution. For example Friendica could meet a lot of this requirements and will soon speak ActrivityPub natively. 🙂 But I also think Mastodon could improve the user experience of being part of a community/group. That's why I also support this feature request: https://github.com/tootsuite/mastodon/issues/139
#Mastodon celebrates it's two year anniversary. It is really impressive what all the people together with @Gargron achieved. Not only with Mastodon as such but also the underlaying technology #ActivityPub and the rich ecosystem of apps and tool around it. Thanks to all the people who made it happen! I'm sure the free, decentralized and open web has a bright future! #fediversehttps://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/10/mastodons-2-year-anniversary/
@kev I have a 4k monitor in the office and had to reduce the screen resolution because I connect my laptop with HDMI to it and HDMI can do max (I think) 30Hz with 4k which makes moving the mouse really painful. So my recommendation: 4k monitors are great but check in advance how you want to connect your device to it and make sure that you can use a 4k resolution with a high frequency to have a smooth experience.

@HerraBRE I'm not sure about the social network part. For messenger I would agree. In this sense it could also compete with Facebook but more on the level of WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger. DeltaChat is also an interesting approach to it, although I still see many unanswered questions/problems. But in general a mail client which doesn't sucks would be awesome. I always wonder why Gnome ignores this part while producing in all other areas great UX.
@danimo as far as I know they still make a lot of money buy forcing every Android manufacturer to pay patent fees. If I would have MS stocks I would probably sell them before the next report will be released and shows the drop of revenues. 😉
@sesivany Maybe that's interesting to you, here you can connect your Twitter and Mastodon account and it will show you all your Twitter follower who are also on Mastodon (and used the tool as well) https://bridge.joinmastodon.org/
@brainblasted Thanks for all the insights! I read about flatkill.org this morning. While I don't know any technical details I always be careful if I read a lot of one sided information on a lurid domain like "flatkill.org". Your arguments sound way more balanced.
