@bob I guess it would be useful to establish local stars which could be joined together to form a larger ad hoc network. The bridges could be low bandwidth amateur radio RTTY relays on VHF or even microwave, the local stars wifi.
@alpacaherder @bob @hattiecat The local amateur radio operator network is being used but has only 2000 operators and that doesn't help most people communicate. Bluetooth chat apps exist but I never saw the point of those - if you're in Bluetooth range you can talk directly! Or am I missing something? What's needed is a way to establish ad hoc mesh in an emergency with the existing backbone unavailable.
I see the terrible situation in Puerto Rico and wonder what mesh networking or applications like Briar messenger or the Serval project that are designed for ad hoc networking could do. I have no experience of mesh networking but any comments? @bob
