Just for the record: I love Mastodon.

Is it the end-game of the peer-to-peer, decentralised, end-to-end encrypted personhood-protecting platform(s) we need? No. Is it fucking awesome? Yes.

It’s a beautiful brick on the bridge we must build between the centralised and peer-to-peer worlds.

Now let’s use it like the stepping stone that it is, be thankful that it exists, help make it even better, and interoperate with it on the road to greener pastures.

printers are one fucking allegory for capitalism. it never works, has no diagnostics, is broken on purpose by manufacturers, consumes strictly licensed cartridges by the same corporation, often requires heavy as shit software that also never works, and overall has a ridiculous cost

External discourse has shifted from "it's too complicated" to "maybe I'm smart enough to handle that complexity for the value it provides!" From pessimism to positivity.

I think at a point it's hard to ignore that there are a lot of non-nerds who figured it out, so it can't be _that_ hard.

They're starting to realize the cost of corporate silo simplicity.

it frustrates me that I believe that the way we're handling identity and social relationships on the current iteration of the fediverse is Very Wrong, but it's just a lot of talk from me until I can demo with real code I guess

I hope we don't get locked into dangerous antipatterns before it's too late to shift the direction of the network

Okay anyway I said a lot of things here... but here's the general idea: current federation rollout assumes:

- there's one you
- there's one path to get to you
- one naming authority should get to define our names
- when it comes to breadth vs depth, popularity is more important than deep relationships

But these assumptions comes from surveillance capitalism social networks. Reverse all of these and things get interesting.

It's a shame that most Bugs Bunny cartoons are not acceptable for today's children. I grew up watching them and turned out fine, only wanting to cook 2 to 3 people tops in a giant outdoor stew pot.

It's almost as if people forgot the point of using a social network was to make friends and fucking NETWORK SOCIALLY.

People want a fucking curated "top topics" feed, not to make friends anymore for some god damn reason
