@kev @fitheach @codesections My thoughts exactly - I think "topic" would be better than identity ("I am..."). Identity makes the sorting overbroad. Selecting "sysadmin" brings up instances for scifi, creativity, Finland, podcasts, anime, Germany, motorsport, activism, photography, and LTBQ.

This is definitely an improvement, though - it wasn't that user-friendly when I joined.

@kev @mooshoe I think you and OP are right about decentralization being oversold. The only real benefit is that if your admin and/or nation-state is being a dick, you can go elsewhere. But the account portability problem hasn't really been solved yet, so "going elsewhere" basically means starting from scratch.

That aside, what features do you think users have to learn that aren't present elsewhere in the popular social media vernacular?

@kev Very true. If I recall, the official list of instances is organized by instance/size instead of topic, right? Maybe that should be flipped? Like a word cloud of topics -> click -> instances for that topic?

@stevelord Exactly! I realize in retrospect that I sounded a bit dismissive about user types, which was not my intent. My point was, contrary to OP, *these are not specifically computer nerds*. They're just normal people.

@allan @thurloat Heres what I've got:

The play area has two boundaries set in parallel several meters apart. The play proceeds in two phases. First, all but one kid starts on the outside of one boundary. The remaining kid (caller) says "Cross Canada if..." then some descriptor, like a red shirt. All kids in red shirts get free passage across the play area to the other boundary. Then, the rest of the kids run across, trying not to be tagged by the caller. If tagged???

It's coming up on a year since I moved to Canada. The transition has been huge - new place, new job, new life - and there is still a lot to do.

That said, it's still wild to think that this is my life, and I am so thankful that it is.
