These sorts of takes drive me crazy, because the concept is really easy: Mastodon is like a bunch of twitters that talk to each other.

Easy mode: Join Mastodon.social.
Normal mode: Pick an instance based on your interests.
Hard mode: Run your own instance.

I mean, the largest instance is randos, and one of the next largest is sex workers. This isn't rocket science.

Do we do a disservice by trying to start everyone at normal mode?

I'm out with my little one and watching a group of kids play a tag-type game called "Cross Canada". Have y'all heard of this?

@gretchenmcc Joined first half of 2017 - always saw it as "birdsite".

My assumption was a combo of two things:
1) a community sensitive to triggering content (and given the number of Twitter refugees on Mastodon, an assumption that a direct mention could be triggering)
2) a general propensity for silliness and playfulness.

@paul It does have a larger purpose, but it covers the purpose of a warrant canary as well. They literally have a blog post called "A Transparency Report Is A Canary".

Firefox certainly isnt private by default, but they seem to have done a good job in empowering the user to control their data so far. If you find anything different, please let me know!
