@angristan I know your feels of frustration wrt reboots for meltdown and other oddities. On Friday my job's IAAS host rebooted some firewall instances that kernel panic'd on the reboot phase, and we were hard down for 3 or 4 hours. It was nightmarish.
We wound up re-wiring our network replacing the legacy firewalls with IAAS firewall security groups in a little over an hour and a half and got all 700+ instances back on-line.
Dealing with collat. damage today. #adminwoes #patchfriday? #darnit

@yakky If i can recommend k8s the hard way, just dedicate a weekend and go through it. it'll take a couple hours but you'll have a very firm grasp of how distributions are put together.
It also gives you a good overview of the basic objects at play.
If the goal is just to get proficient with using it, the CKA admin test offered by the linux foundation has free training material and covers everything an admin will need to know.
Good luck on your adventure!

@yakky Thats not an uncommon sentiment. There's a lot that changes between releases too so its a moving target.
However if your objects are in stable, its mostly going to be the same save for some small implementation details between those minor revs.

Marcus Aurelius, one of the most powerful people in the world, had trouble getting out of bed.
It's human, universal, - you're not alone. 😊
>At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”

I'm currently super pissed off at #Intel/#Linux/#Microsoft.
So many of the shipping "fixes" for #Meltdown and #Spectre are causing noticeable problems such as "programs aren't starting" and "things take 30x longer".
I'm afraid this will kick off another round of "nobody should install updates!" We had *just* gotten out of that habit :/.

We totally jinxed the Freenode bridge by claiming it's stable again - for the last 24 hours it's been falling behind badly; potentially due to perf problems caused by Meltdown mitigation, or possibly just due to load. We're working on it.

my husband is playing w google home on his pixel 2 in the car. he asked it to play jazz. worked well, queued up a nice playlist in google play music. impressive.
after a few songs, it suddenly started playing some kind of story about a strangler who murdered women. No kidding. With our small kids in the car - not ok.
So he then asked it for relaxing music. It complained and then played loud heavy metal while displaying an up$ell screen.

@nolan You too huh? That kicked in for me when i turned 30. Its bizarre how changes like that kick in at biological timeframes like a switch almost. it becomes all or nothing.
in my 20's sleep deprivation was so common i almost championed it (out of ignorance i assure you)
A nice cup of hot tea and a book do wonders for that though. And i applaud your 10pm lights out routine. Thats a good one to adopt.

my wife just read a thing that says scientists measured elephants' responses to stimulus, and the relative "same" part of their brains lit up looking at humans, as does in humans when we see puppies
Y'ALL! ELEPHANTS THINK WE'RE ADORABLE
