@klaatu So maybe what people actually want is a git code review tool design that allows easy participation from the submitter on the recipient's platform of choice.

Simplistic answer: Allow sending a login URL to the commit author's email that allows them to come onto the site and respond to feedback without creating an account. Could easily be added to many git web tools.

@cosine git's rerere feature might help, for that matter.

If the software is made in a more modular way, that helps too, but it's hard to know *what parts* need to be modular to begin with.

In my experience, even cherry-picking a single feature from a decent-quality codebase is nontrivial if there has been any divergence in the meantime if there's any degree of non-locality to the changes.

Grrr, Cloudflare is so annoying with its "protected email" every time there's anything with an @ sign in it.

In this case I'm using Lynx, so there's no Javascript allowed ever. But I also see it on random sites in Firefox with NoScript enabled, and Cloudflare will hide things that aren't email addresses, too—not just Mastodon usernames, but even version strings for software, e.g. "some-lib@1.0.4"

Having a hard time not yelling at people today over conflicting expectations of what Mastodon can/should be and do.

...and it's not really people's fault, not entirely. There's a nasty tradeoff every platform (and every user) has to make around privacy, and it's mostly not the fault of the users that they don't have good options to choose from.

I feel like I know part of the path to a better solution, but not the whole thing.

It's noteworthy that he's explaining how the mouse works, and having his colleague show off the tracking wheels.

When they show the side-by-side of the tracking point moving with the mouse, and then again while manipulating the wheels on the flipped-over mouse, it demystifies the whole thing.

These days, designers seem to work hard to hide the mechanism. I wonder what penalty this has on user empowerment.

@ajroach42 Oh, like a collection of clips, which can be combined MIDI-style?

Watching this more, I think the computer is giving him feedback in an interesting way -- there's the "boop" of "you clicked a thing" (or maybe executed a command) but also there seems to be a background drone that changes to lower pitch and louder volume when he's in the middle of some command sequence and it's waiting for additional input.

Not entirely sure. Seems cool though.

Currently watching The Mother of All Demos (Doug Engelbart, 1968) and wishing I could just have an audio extract of all the boops and bleeps the computer makes.

@apg @technomancy Yeah, that was news to me. But their forums are full of people saying "where is my money or CHIP?" and apparently basically all the employees are working elsewhere...

I don't know why they're bothering to keep the lights on and pretend they're coming back.
