    you don't have the secret key to become that identity, and without it, you can't decode the torrents you're holding.
    you're better off than running a server of any of the federated networks and finding users are communicating just the same stuff on it. what kind of nonsense argument is that?

    o la entendiste perfectamente y has sacado una buena respuesta. es que me dijeron que WhatsApp recuperaba los mensajes si lo instalabas en otros dispositivo, y eso seguro no es compatible con la idea de que él no pueda acceder a los mensajes sin cifrado, o que no tenga la contraseña. pero si acaso lo hace a través de copias de respaldo sin cifrar, eso explica. a ver si whatsapp logra recuperar los mensajes en otro dispositivo, si no se han habilitado las copias de respaldo; alguien lo ha probado?

    @pettter @HerraBRE @bjoern what completely flabbergasts me in this discussion is that instead of asking "how can we make this happen", most people seem to be looking for reasons this would never work.

    I feel this approach is not going to move us forward.

    I also feel that (quoting Eben Moglen, I think), the server must die to save the web. As long as we have servers, we will have centralization.

    Peer-to-peer, end-to-end principle (in the revolutionary, "serverless" sense) is what we need back.

    heh. twister and ssb take care of nearly all of the backing up, you just need to save your identity key pair, the rest can be recovered from the network. that's the beauty of truly distributed systems. federation is a step towards decentralization, but for the very concerns you raise, I'm pretty sure it's not a step in the best direction
