Huh. TorrentFreak wrote an article about #peertube
https://torrentfreak.com/peertube-a-censorship-resistent-youtube-alternative-180623/
@tinker basically, it communicates with a server hosted in the US, where it sends at least:
- every public toot seen by the app
- every OAuth token of its users
...I don't think I'll get any sleep.
This tootdon thing...
Fuck you, MobiRocket Inc. of Burlingame, California.
...one search later, I find out Burlingame is "located on the San Francisco Peninsula".
That explains quite a lot...
Anyone uninstalling #Tootdon :
remember to revoke the app from Settings!
The server gets the oauth token for access to your account..
@mi It doesn't just grab data from Tootdon users but it grabs the toots that have been interacted with by Tootdon users also...
OK, so #tootdon communicates with this server: https://api.tootdon.ooo
This server is hosted in the USA(!!!)
There are several endpoints: /api/v1/instances gives a paginated list of instances, and seems to be the *only* one that doesn't require authentication.
There's also /api/v1/statuses and /api/v1/users. Not sure how authentication to this API works yet...
By the way, it also appears to be tied with this company: http://mobirocket.com/
@emsenn There are plenty of easy to use CMSes these days, though..?
Oh, awesome!
#PeerTube v1.0.0-beta1 is out now! I've been eagerly awaiting the beta for months!
https://github.com/Chocobozzz/PeerTube/releases
Is anyone planning to spin up an instance?
Oh, brilliant.
So Windows 10 now has the ability for any application to get system-unique tracking identifiers that persist across reinstalls by storing them in the TPM or UEFI firmware variables...
Look at these APIs: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/uwp/api/Windows.System.Profile.SystemIdentification
To add insult to injury, the APIs lead into clipc!GetOfflineDeviceUniqueID, which calls into a licensing-related service which would be obfuscated by Warbird...
@calvin @djsundog some people are practical
others are madmen
here's an example of the latter:https://board.asm32.info/
(Windows NT 3.10.297, July 1992 beta) https://mastodon.social/media/oyyzxKnUUKUipP6dtfc
@c1t7 nasty hobbitses patching the conditional jumpses
@Azure the thing about copyright is it's not a one-size-fits-all affair either
there's no reason for software from the 80s/90s to still be under copyright either.
This page still exists.
I'm sure some would want to kill it with fire.
https://www.microsoft.com/typography/web/fonts/comicsns/default.htm
being into software preservation, i'm interested in #90s #warez #CDs (or other media, like tape backups), that were sold in the black market (etc) at that time, because they tend to have interesting stuff on them that since got lost to time (example: one tape backup had a build of NT "Cairo" on it!)
if anyone in the fediverse has any, and is willing to image them for me (or get them sent somewhere to image), kindly contact me :)
please boost for visibility
@Gargron I just noticed the Mastodon sticker is top of the best-sellers list too.
