Many planetary nebula, such as M 2-9 shown here in this Hubble image, are bipolar, that is have two lobes to each side of the central star. We don't have a clear idea on why this happens. https://octodon.social/media/lnQC6wZJSj9ExCE8yM4

@pasqui023 @devurandom we need to keep in mind that a lot of Scandinavian wealth has roots in (or exists thanks to) oil/gas/etc money and colonialism (source: https://aeon.co/ideas/the-hitchhiking-scandinavian-way-to-the-imperial-riches).

The Scandinavians ‘hitchhiked’ their way to the boons of empire – Miles Macallister | Aeon Ideas
      from Aeon
For many of the most successful imperialist countries, empire was just not worth the trouble. Scandinavian monarchies in the 17th and 18th centuries endeavoured to build empires that would rival the Dutch or even the British, but come the 19th cen...

@orbifx my problem is that the author starts with talking about physics with verifiable experiments, moves to things that physics cannot explain yet and from there extrapolates to some non-falsifiable statements. This is not how science works.

Searching for truth is not about [quoting the author] ‘ultimately defending our views’. That’s how religion works.

This is not the first time Aeon published a fishy article. I hope in a week or two they publish a rebuttal (like in the past).

@orbifx so many red flags ‘In my book…’, ‘This is the view I ultimately defend in…’, ‘This essay was made possible through the support of a grant from Templeton Religion Trust to Aeon and a separate grant from the Templeton funded ‘Pantheism and Panentheism’ project to the author.’, ‘recently finished my first book’. I guess Aeon is in real need of money if they publish such things from time to time. :/

@evilscientistca So back in the 1920 stars were classified based on the prominence of H-beta Balmer absorption line ― alphabetically, from the most prominent ‘A’ to the least ‘O’.

Annie Jump Cannon projected those A,…,O scale to the temperature based OBAFGKM (missing classes were too close to other classes and were dropped), where the surface temperature smoothly decreases from O to M.
The new scale preserved old names, but at the cost of losing relation between them.

    Damn trade-offs!

@pho4cexa it is not dumb device and for sure it is better than a refurb laptop.
You do not need to charge it every day and it is distraction free *out-of-the-box*. No additional steps required.

*But* you can connect a keyboard to an e-reader (hell, you can even use it as a remote screen https://github.com/borzunov/remoteink).

Still, an integrated&dedicated device is better for creating healthy habits and has better accessibility, especially for elders.

Not everyone can afford DIY solutions/hacks.
