    This month video is done.

    https://mastodon.social/@gtalug/100902371598260299

Notes for the next month video:

    * Use cd/in with 3.5mm jack instead of XLR + adapters to 3.5mm for wireless microphone

    * Test the levels of wireless microphone when presenter is wearing it.

    * Set gain levels to -12dB and not -3dB like I do now (everything is too noisy)

    * Don't adjust audio controls after everything is set.

For some reason tracker-store indexer likes to hog CPU when I'm encoding videos. I believe local file indexing is nuisance at best.

For Gnome users there's a whole article on how to disable that -- https://www.soimort.org/notes/171103/

For KDE users it's enough to just remove the package along with any gnome-related stuff that it pulls with it.

    apt-get remove tracker

      from Eventbrite
Hacklab.to & GTALUG present: Seatbelts and Airbags for Bash w/ Michael Potter # Abstract:This presentation will focus on the underutilized features of bash that are critical to building production quality scripts. Demos will show you how to turn on options and error trapping that expose the hidden time bombs in the code. Turning these features on should be considered a requirement, much like turning on “strict” and “warnings” is considered a requirement for Perl programs. Also, as much of the bash syntax has become outdated, the presentation will explain which syntax is best to use and which syntax to avoid.Knowledge of any of the common UNIX scripting languages will be sufficient to understand the presentation and script authors at all proficiency levels should find value in attending. Although the presentation does not address differences between Korn shell and bash, much of what will be discussed also applies to Korn shell.# Bio:Michael Potter is a long time UNIX user and C developer and more recently a consultant to insurance companies.  He is a proponent of strongly typed languages which inspired him to try to "fix" bash by using its underutilized features to make it more reliable. Please arrive early to be seated, presentation will start at 7pm sharp.

@zigg I have a 3-year old chromebook with 2GB of RAM that I upgraded with 256GB of storage. For most of the things I need to do with a tiny laptop it's fine, but I really needed windows on it once -- I tried running VM and everything just ground to a halt.

Your best bet might be looking for alternatives in FOSS world, or attempting running things through WINE, because there's just not enough resources for proper windows emulation.

@annika The unfortunate reality of this is yeah, this is a problem. I needed linux at work and I ended up buying a separate computer so I could get all of my key bindings, performance and not jumping through weird and infuriating hoops.

Running a VM is a less drastic way of trying to solve the same problem. You can try disabling all the compositing effects that would free up all the 3D rendering that has to be done in software on a VM.

@annika Do you just need to have command line to the system, or video acceleration for 3D graphics?

If its the former you can try Putty and SSH into the system -- https://www.putty.org/, or I've heard good things about Windows Subsystem for Linux -- https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10, you might have better luck with it than with Virtualbox.

Fortunately I found Automatic Gain Control plugin for audacity, and it basically saved the audio. The audio is not nearly as good as if it were recordred with my Rode, but at least it now legible.

The plugin can be found here -- https://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?t=68501

The only custom setting I've used -- squelch threashold level was set to -40db.

A few days ago I discovered an interesting bug with Canon Vixia HF800

The camera would only record audio with external microphone if headphones are plugged in. If external microphone is plugged in, but not headphones, then the camera would record audio on internal microphone.

Here are my two rules for not getting caught in bad or even just uncomfortable situations on the phone:

    1. Never answer the phone unless it's a loved one. Roll it over to voicemail to give yourself room to process.

    2. Search for the callback number on the Internet and see what it's for, and use a critical eye.

@Jo Then I hope I'm wrong, and probably project.

In the last few days after Linus announcement spent way too much time on reddit arguing with people, and some of them considered moving to one of the BSDs, but not FreeBSD because it also has a CoC and therefore not kosher.

@Jo I don't think I want you to know the connection, but I can bet money that it's related to brogrammer disgust with the newly adopted Linux CoC.
