@datagrok Is that the Plank? The Preonic looked interesting but if I'm being honest it's just for the
    aesthetics.

Really I would just be buying it to take photos of it. That said, the open nature of the hardware and firmware keeps me looking back over my shoulder at it.

@datagrok I'm a huge fan of my Kinesis Advantage 2 although I couldn't prove it is beneficial. In practice it could be impossible to prove conclusively due to the uniqueness of each person's setup. For me, the most important factors around ergonomics are (roughly ordered):

    - Mindful of posture
    - Chair
    - Monitor position
    - Keyboard
    - Mouse/pointing device
    - Lighting
    - Foot pedals

Towards the end you get more into eyestrain, etc. I also consider diet + exercise a factor.

I feel like the "Today's Icon" in Tootdon is kinda like the <blink> tag for profile photos. And yet, here we are.

Sometimes it feels like a constant struggle for software to be as useful as it was 3 years ago.

@minimum haven't had the pleasure, looks like a nice group but I'm hoping I can get away with only one Mastodon account. How many do you have?

@nolan somewhat related, how would you recommend someone pull data to replicate http://emojitracker.com/ for Mastodon?

I am now pre-approved to pre-register for an iPhone X at 12:01 AM (2:01 Central time) this Thursday night.

If someone asked, I'd still say that I'm not an Apple fanboy but that I just want to ensure I have access to (and be able to plan in my work for) what new features/tech people will have broadly adopted with their phones in 1-2 years.

Is there a recommended way to pull down all toots from an instance for analysis? Would like to replicate the twitter emoji tracker for Mastodon #firehose #data #emoji

To complain about the shortcomings of the infrastructure we have, and devise perfect alternatives, is to miss the basic reality that the process of figuring out what the infrastructure must look like is part of the process of building the infrastructure; that everything gets manufactured to fulfill an immediate need.

@hellojed this is a great idea and I don't know why more people don't do this. The only missing part is references/testimonials.

Oh yeah, did you peeps know I do web hosting and site building? I know it is super apparent from my home page (https://web.archive.org/web/20171016221328/https://interi.org/), but whenever I mention my servers folks a little surprised.

I am also a decent human, and try to be of service to others, so if you know someone that needs a person like me that knows the stuff I know, let them know! ^_^

What's the cheapest (non-networked) way for me to distribute small files to lots of people.

Said another way, what is the cheapest piece of physical media currently available, irrespective of capacity?

From the non-technical side of Mastodon there seems to be a discussion on what "federation" means. My reference is mostly this great article from @dzuk http://telegra.ph/An-open-letter-about-whitelisting-and-greylisting-07-23 but if there is better context I'd love to learn more about it.

Before I begin, I would like to say that although I am a moderator of a.weirder.earth, this doesn't reflect that instance's opinion, just my own. But yeah, I am in support of whitelisting and greylisting, and here's why... Terms (in case anyone reading is unsure) Whitelisting - System of moderation where all instances are suspended until they are vetted. (Something awoo.space does) Greylisting - As in Daggertooth's suggestion on Github. Like Whitelisting, but instances are automatically silenced instead of…

Is there a good primer on how Mastodon works?

I'm seeing a lot of discussion around moderation and whitelisting. Want to have a deeper understanding of the tech to be able to contribute intelligently but there is a lot of context and provenance of all the components.

So many great possibilities for the follow/local/federated model. The more I consider it the more it feels like a natural evolution of microblogging. Granted the infrastructure/tooling is not yet present but feels like it is not far off.
