i’ve been thinking a lot about software stewardship and software cooperatives lately, in the context of taking responsibility for the craft as a class of craftspeople. i’ve got an essay on the subject on its third draft so maybe i’ll publish it soon but since im on the bus maybe i’ll just blither about it for a bit.

it’s one thing for workers to control the conditions of their toil but another for craftspeople to take responsibility for their craft, and we need to do both.

@garbados I've finally been reading Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance and when I got to the idea that solving the problem of ugliness and shoddiness and entropy promotion of technology requires the people who make that technology to a) care and b) have peace of mind while working, I immediately connected it to the current tech industry, 40 years later. (Random aside, just popped into my mind when I saw yr toot)

Having now caught up on fediverse drama as much as I care to, I have an observation....

....it's ALMOST like using accountability-free blocklists comes with some downsides, yeah? Imagine that. :facing_think:

I hear the soft sound of a lot of irony being missed.

I wonder if there are companies that are a good fit for people who are good at programming but bad at programming alone when it comes to the 95% of the workaday tasks that aren't naturally engaging in their own. So, lots of pair programming and close collaboration of 2+ developers on even fairly small projects. I also wonder if there are any shops that have perfected the art of doing this remotely.

I think the next release of #mastalab will offer the ability to follow instances.
Currently, I need to set by default cross-account actions but an important part already works.

Has #forkoff forked yet? I'm not really interested in their politics but #mastodon really needs a fork. Instead of polishing existing features that have been clunky since they were made, mastodon is continually adding new features. And these features are destined to end up like the existing features, unfinished and not really usable.

And despite talking about new user experience a lot, the feedback from new users (which are pain points for existing users) is ignored. The main UI is complex, columns should flex, why can't I interact with public pages, etc.

While I'm at it, it is truly amazing the number of Android apps which absolutely shit when your phone happens to switch networks when you hit a button. You'd think in the Year of Our Lord two thousand and eighteen that MAYBE some engineer involved at SOME level of the stack on these apps MIGHT have given a thought to that :thinking_dump::thinking_dump: :thinking_dump:

@mayel @aral @deadsuperhero @aaronpk @cwebber @bhaugen totally. We need an ID that we can migrate from service to service. OpenID plus more.

Right now my data is spread. My identity is spread. And frankly I don't own my ID. If I wanted to migrate instances I'm at the mercy of the instance admins.

Hey, it'd be cool if relays also facilitated hashtag search, allowing small instances which don't want to have a huge database to at least query the hashtags of the everything the relay sees. I feel like the better search on them works, the more attractive hashtags become. Yay masto hashtags! 😀 @Gargron #mastodev

Here’s a survey about the social network #Mastodon. You are invited to take part regardless of your level of involvement or how often you use it or how long you've been here.

I don’t work for them, I’m just curious.

@drixse @jz @deutrino There are several other options but they are all flawed in ways such as usability and limited popularity. Tor messenger is not mobile yet, Matrix is plagued by latency issues and poorly implemented trust systems for encryption, XMPP is just bad for normal everyday people and the clients suck, there is LibreSignal and Chatsecure which are derivative of Signal but have tedious support. Matrix (the main app for it is called Riot) has the most promise as of now.

@thufir Great info, thanks. This is pretty much telling me that Signal is still the least worst option, especially for normies. I'll be happy when something less problematic finally beats it in terms of usability.

i'm glad that ActivityPub reached Recommendation status before the Working Group charter expired but I think

    1. It needs a 1.1 or 2.0 release to clarify a LOT of behaviors and clean up a lot of aspects of the spec

    2. That 1.1/2.0 draft should basically be a rewrite informed by how it is (a) being used, and (b) planned to be used by implementors in the wild, with special attention paid to implementations with unconventional needs
