@Wsteria I am staring at my current conlang instead of working on my nanowrimo.
it wants to have 15 or 30 cases depending on how you count. I am all "what are you a Finno-Ugric language or something?"
How are you?

@Alexis I think the issue there is it tried to address three things instead of one. The first being what could have made it the anti-capitalist hour, the second being that humans are responsible for crap not technology and the third being the fine line between activism and terrorism.
I think it's reach exceeded its grasp as a result
Looks like we're getting another historical ep next week. Will be wonderful if the strong historicals keep up

@noelle "In 2008, the filter of the free wireless service of the town of Whakatane in New Zealand blocked searches involving the town's own name because the filter's phonetic analysis deemed the "whak" to sound like fuck; the town name is in Maori, and in the Maori language "wh" is most commonly pronounced as "f"."

@DialMforMara vowel length distinction, yes, like in Japanese same sound held longer
stress is on the second syllable anyway so harmony just afterwards works

@DialMforMara does this make sense for allophony?
- Fricatives are voiced intervocalically
- Stops are voiced in stressed syllables
- Nasals assimilate place from a following consonant
- Other than word initial vowels β short vowels in an unstressed syllable harmonise with the vowel in the stressed syllable
- Where the same consonant appears across a hiatus it degeminates (eg atta is pronounced as ata)
- Trills become flaps intervocalically in unstressed syllables #conlanging -

@VyrCossont this sounds like a great apocalytic novel plot. Sort of a reverse Screwfly Solution...

@DialMforMara hmm I was thinking the English orthography. You know so readers won't look at a word like pefa or losi and not get that those are pronounced peva and lozi

@DialMforMara I'm actually thinking of things like f which is labial in the conlang and labio-dental in English... and avoiding getting my teeth involved. (oddly the Uvulas don't worry me)
(this is also why dental fricatives never exist in my conlangs... I literally cannot pronounce/hear th even though it's a native sound - depending on context I either th-stop or th-front. It used to annoy the **** out of my teachers)

More importantly voicing on stops and fricatives is purely allophonic. I haven't quite worked out when stops voice yet but intervocalic fricatives are voiced. Should I make this clear iin the orthography? #conlanging
