    @hexmasteen @lafnlab The description does not mention any protocol(s) for federation, I suppose the choice will be ActivityPub?

    @buoyantair It's impossible to ban any company from the whole federating space. Luckily, because otherwise there would be nothing special about Fediverse. Personally, I don't see practical disadvantages in corporations maintaining presence here - blocking tools exist. But the fact that most servers are in several largest infrustructures and route traffic through large services is indeed a red flag which ruins the whole idea of "decentralizing" data. Especially since there's no encription here.

    As @amolith noticed, Cloudflare joined #Fediverse. Not really, only Tw crossposting. From the discussion (https://masto.nixnet.xyz/@amolith/101918626785187773) I found out the one and only #Mastodon "self-hosting" solution masto.host uses Cloudflare by default (?) It somewhat explains the ~232 (according to @crimeflare ) Mastodon servers.

    🧐 Excellent time to remind of last year's research by @leah:
    * https://chaos.social/@leah/99837391793032137

    A similar research for the greater Fediverse will be very insightful.

    @galaxis Yep, this isn't the best approach and would require manual changes to behaviour once some hard-coded platform adds a feature support. But theoretically this (limited) approach could be used now, by any platform, perhaps to be extracted later and expanded into something more generalistic on the protocol level to be adopted by other projects. I definitely agree with you that this issue needs to be addressed somehow. For the sake of consistency of user experience in Fediverse.

    @galaxis Perhaps detecting what kind of software recipient(s) use would be enough? Showing warnings to users at the moment they choose recipient(s). "Your recipient's server doesn't support DMs, your message may be sent as public. Do you still want to send?" "Your recipient's server doesn't support encryption, they will get gibberish. Do you still want to send?" Software can be recognized through NodeInfo? (assuming they don't spoof)
