@feld Sad thing is as a former Kobo owner I attribute this more to their lazy UI design than anything nefarious.

Me: I need to get to bed
Also me: Reads an interview with Eric Clayton of Saviour Machine fame
Also me: Has to listen to the first few tracks of the first Saviour Machine album to remember how amazing this band is.

Called it.
Meetup is going to be sold by #wework, so it's anybody's guess who the new owner will be.

Lots of interesting discussion on ethics-based licenses. I think it's something we need to think about.
Unfortunately I also think they're going to prove ineffective and harmful. Ethics-based licenses are great when the ethics map to your own ethics. But what happens when someone declares that their software can't be used by "people like you" (whatever that might be). Then you're trying to use a license to weaponize your beliefs in your software.
Be careful out there.

@Canageek This one looks nice:

@Canageek Then your best option is to get an actual serial port card, but I have no idea what is out there.

@Canageek That's assuming you have PCI slots.

@sara Ugh, looks like it's strictly their service. No source code at all. That's a bit of a minus for me. Means if they ever decide to disappear then you're back to figuring it all out on your own.

@sara Interesting. Wonder what they're using under the hood to accomplish this (eg is this custom code or a rebranded HAProxy setup).

@Canageek what's the application?
Generally speaking there's two kinds of USB to serial ports: the ones that are crap and the ones that are good. Unfortunately I'm not expert in which is which either. 😕

@starbreaker There are abusive tech assholes and then there's Adam Neumann who decided to take that all to an uncompromising level.
https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2019/09/wework-adam-neumann-returns-6-million is a start, but it gets into levels of cultishness that even the most devout tech-bro CEO would shrink at.
