Trying to get folks to move off of Meetup onto something like gettogether.community has proven rough, even though I'm rather convinced that WeWork (the company that bought meetup.com and a bunch of other companies) is going to literally implode with their failed IPO and CEO ouster.

Problem is that folks will just move to whatever is easiest and that is not "type in g e t t o...", because at that point they have to think about what it is they're using.

Trying to get folks in my circles to use alternative platforms is my eternal hell.

Inertia is a hell of a drug.

@lynnesbian Totally sympathize. I want to be able to open up code, look in there, and not feel either existential dread or recoil like someone snapped my hand with a ruler.

@Jo This Amiga version is pretty telling though. The Amiga could handle those sprites and it looks like they punted pretty hard:

@Jo That and in the PC version you're over a lot more "voxel" terrain. And water. And in the dark. 😁

@mwlucas I'll admit that I didn't know what this was until recently (today) but that's because I haven't read the Networking book that I got from you yet. You may shame me at your earliest convenience. (unrelated, that Wikipedia article is the first in a while that seems to explain more than confuse the issue, so huzzah).

@Jo Furiously concur. SD cards were bad enough, but with Micro SD cards I feel like I could accidentally inhale them and not even notice.

@Jo My guess is that Infogrames /Hasbro had the Daytona brand license in 2001 since they published a unrelated Daytona game in 2002

@djsundog Honestly any IBM PC compatible nostalgia confuses me. I mean, there are certain case designs and whatnot that I have an affinity toward, but it's not like I can't emulate literally anything from an 8088 onward with reasonable fidelity.

@sean Also if I knew any professional lithographers that would put in the work for the grins or at least a modest beverage allowance.

@kensanata But yeah, if it isn't in email then my chances of contacting that person drops to zero.

@kensanata Only one I'd change is requiring folks to leave a voice mail so if it's important enough I will call back. But yeah, unless I know you / your phone number, and have a reason to talk to you then you can duke it out with voicemail.

@sean This is the time when I really wish I was secure enough in my employment searches to get a cover letter professionally lithographed, scan the resulting printed page, paste the resulting image into a .docx file, and then upload it.

@zkat Hard same.

I have yet to find a use-case that doesn't get covered by make and doesn't somehow involve arcane rituals and other complexities.

TFW when you look a piece of code and wonder just how the hell it's supposed to do anything for more than literally one minute.
