@snail Well, the site that I looked up doesn't mention that men can be raped too. Doesn't single that out in the same way it does for women. It's funny that they include a few links targeted more towards women but not men otherwise... even though this is an advice place. What do men do when it comes to domestic abuse or rape?

@snail It doesn't give any mention of that. Technically, the way that the law is worded over here excludes that. It has to include penetration. But it gets excused off that the court won't take it literally which is weird.

@detectivehyde Yeah. His roommate had also called the police on him saying that he was unstable. That might be related to why they picked him up. It's really weird.

@detectivehyde Basically. They had him in custody because he didn't have some kind of insurance card when he was 17 on him? So years later, they picked him up on it even though they were trying to get information about it prior and there was nothing more to it. Then he later dies in jail because of it. He sounds like a bright lad... gone far, far too soon. He was 23, I believe.ย

I'm listening to a mother talking about how she lost her son who has Aspergers. It's really sad... he was in police custody at the time. I feel sad thinking about it... I hope she and her family gets support. They almost couldn't get an open-casket funeral because things took too long.

@elfie @ihavebigtits @dtluna That sounds a lot like life to me. Not many people have good lives now due to the circumstances that happen to them and other factors like their own decisions that play a role. People change. You have to keep fighting for your love... keep communicating so that you can meet each other's changing needs rather than taking advantage or being too consumed in everyday life that you neglect your partner. It is something that I keep in mind with mine. Often, we also struggle with knowing ourselves which can strain the relationship... you can't communicate what you don't know is a problem.

There is a trend towards partners foregoing marriage and simply living together with everything else. It's really only a matter of time before this trend gets bigger and the state intervenes to add benefits and drawbacks. Registers this if they don't already.

"A married couple can separate informally but if you want to end the marriage formally, you will need to go to court and get divorced. Both partners have a right to stay in the home until either there has been a divorce or the court has ordered one partner to leave."

If unmarried here, then the separation can be done without intervention but... "The court does have power to make orders relating to the care of the children." Interesting. I wonder how long it will be before the state has more say.

"If a married couple has a joint bank account, the money is owned jointly regardless of who put it into the account. On the death of one partner, the whole account immediately becomes the property of the other. Debts and overdrafts relating to a joint bank account will be the responsibility of both or either partner, irrespective of who incurred them.

If each partner in a married couple has a separate bank account and one dies, the bank may allow the other partner to withdraw the balance providing the amount is small." Hmmm... so get yourself a partner who is adverse to debt and overdrafts.

"If you have a joint account, then both you and your partner have access to the account, regardless of whether only one of you pays into it. If your relationship ends, the money will belong to both of you. However, if one of you didn't use the account at all, for example, you didn't pay any money in or take any out, it may be difficult to claim that you have any right to it.

If the account is in joint names, on the death of one partner, the other partner becomes entitled to the balance and can continue to have unlimited access to the account. However, a proportion of the balance will be taken into account when calculating the value of the estate of the person who has died."
Goddamnit, state. Keep your paws off the joint account.

@elfie @ihavebigtits @dtluna I don't see it as gaining validation to love someone else. But we have fought for our modern interpretations of marriage, to be able to have choice and marry for love... that romantic vision is more modern compared to what was just prior to it so I guess I don't see your point about mixing legality with love.

As I've said before on fedi, I think marriage provides stability and health for the family unit. It formally merges two families together and can clear some confusions up like with the changing of surname(s) which the children will take too. But I did hear that it benefits children to have both biological parents married. What kind of marriage is down to the individuals... I see that as a private matter. If they want it to be religious, then it is their choice. If you don't plan to have children then marriage has less need or are fine with just co-inhabiting then that is an option too. Then again, the state will involve itself whatever you do... I think there are legal rights for couples that live together for a set period of time now.
