We are rolling out a distributed #youtube using #peertube It's just about ready as RSS is implemented to move the "seed" videos off the central server to the seedbox's so that all the video is redundantly backed up by the volunteer "users". https://buff.ly/2HytPSI
@campbell it's much harder for them to do this as the data is shared redundancy over meany hundreds/thousands of independent servers, each "instance" will be run by people directly agensts the government agender and the data can of course just flow outside there duristriction and then flow back in by meany different sources. It dues this out the box so resistance. To censorship is hard coded into the project.
Companies are currently sending me a lot of mail in which they are playing a fun game called „how can we spin 'the EU GDPR is forcing us to show the barest minimum of respect for user data protection' into it sounding like we‘re doing this because we‘re good guys“
@Hamishcampbell I recently went to a panel put on by a new start up that was called 'hacking the finance' and something about a new economy. It was incredibly shallow take on the issue without any recognition of so many people who are already working in the area. I think I'm more interested now in people doing deep dives into topics. But can be difficult to share with others who haven't done the dive too. Tricky balance when thinking of outreach
Talking about #rebooting the #openweb been trying to work with/away from the #geekproblem of overcomplexterty and #stupidindividualism build it from scratch/pointlessness. I have been trying to work building open projects agensts the flow of closed #incryptionists for 20 years. I can't express what a relief mastodon (activertypub) has been, it's a weight off my shoulders and a opportunity to put the pointless/draining last 10 years of tech behind us and move on. Am happy to press #reboot button.
For people not already immersed in the subcultures of #FreeCulture or #FreeSoftware, the term #OpenWeb is not any more understandable than #IndyWeb or !Fediverse. But I agree that we should use a single term for consistency, so newcomers understand that all these things are part of the same movement, and #OpenWeb works for me.
Chat, use hashtags; reply to people ; follow some more. It seems the public timelines are easiest to find people until there is a significant number of people on the local timeline.
