Yes, today, after having troubles with windows, I convinced 2 coworkers to try out Linux, I'm gonna show them a few distros this weekend and help them installing it on their secondary computers. Today's a happy day!
@codesections Hope it works out, I want all system76 transactions to be smooth.
The fact of the matter is my computing needs are not heavy so all of the computers I buy are sub $50 USD. The last 5 have all cost me $10. So I might never buy a new computer again unless I change jobs.
But if I bought new, I'd expect the fan and kb to last past the warranty.
@rbe_expert What might make more sense is to claim that 'we', those living today shouldn't be too worried about AI because it's too far off.
However I believe that's wrong too. But that's at least a position I can understand. Thinking the future of AI equals the current state is insane.
Moreover, the current state of AI is good enough to take many jobs now. I believe even if AI development stopped right now, it would still take more and more jobs as implementation details are sorted out.
@rbe_expert This has long been a pet peeve of mine. Unfortunately, it's still going strong.
What amazes me is so many tech people buy into this kind of thinking to the point they're amazed when the speed of progress doubles about every 2 years. It's almost as if someone should make some laws that state things get twice as good every two years.
Do people really not realize that AI will not only get better but as it gets better AI itself will increase the speed at which it gets better?
It's been pointed out that that's a heck of an accusation. It's not an accusation. I'm genuinely curious.
From one blurb on what autism is, "characterized by difficulty in communicating and forming relationships with other people" So I wonder if the reason so many of my acquaintances who've told me they're on the spectrum think Linus' behavior was fine could be related to having difficulty with forming, and by way of extension, reading emotions.
@Wolf480pl@Shamar For what it's worth, I generally agree with you. Especially considering the Open Source Software movement in general. Never should have forked from Free Software !!
@Wolf480pl@Shamar True but it's personal choice on how to use that freedom.
I take your point and make the same argument often.
For example, the best desktop design was created decades ago and all of the people working on all the other desktop environments should stop and put all of their efforts into improving that one or on creating awesome applications. :)
But it's also important to remember the freedom to use others' work to try different ideas is just as important to free software.
@Wolf480pl@Shamar I think the freedom due change the code to suit your needs embraces the right to fragment until your heart's content.
Of course, free software does enable all that you've stated, but that shouldn't and doesn't come at the cost of the freedom to do modify the software as you like.
