@freakazoid @cwebber I agree with you that the last-mile needs to be owned by the local gov't.

I'd make a different case in that I think that it is a critical resource that should be managed like water/sewer/electrical etc.

I'd be willing to trade wireless ownership to get the wires owned by the public. I still view wireless as a bit of a luxury.

@cwebber that's one way to look at it, another would be that it provides more transparency and public battles. They're of course going to buoy their own brands, so we can see how that works with everyone else.

Reality is the worst case is when the large corporations get along and are advantaged to work together. Which is what happened when the cable companies and content providers were separate.

When we setup conditions where they fight among themselves we're better off.

@cwebber eh, seemed inevitable. With Netflix and Amazon getting into content the bigger players had to as well in order to compete.

Unless you were willing to break up those two with anti-trust actions this was the most fair.

I think it will be interesting to see how companies engage with the Fediverse generally, glad to see someone taking that challenge on! It will be tricky.

@liw this is why it's important to separate responsibility for the layers of the stack.

HW support is *mostly* up front then, and the middle layers can be updated over time much more easily. That's where most of the SW bugs are anyway.

Not saying that's perfect though, but allows more choices. For instance on Ubuntu Phone the Libertine tool had to support chroots and LXC because some of the HW packages didn't have new enough kernels with all the namespacing features LXC needed.

@tinker I actually did a lip-sync of that song in the elementary school talent show.

@vickylai I mostly have mine because I believe in professional organizations and the standards work they do. But I also go to several of the local meetings and enjoy the content. Might work well for you traveling to new areas to find the tech people there.

But, I'm rather upset they still charge and restrict the standards they write. I hope that IEEE can step into the modern world there.
