@alyx Yeah, let 'em try. I like to think anyone who's comfortable with who they are and knows how much they want to eat wouldn't be tricked so easily.
-
@alyx Pfffhahaha, oh god, what's worse is you know someone saw that and went, "Hells yeah, that's what my man-cave needs."
Along similar lines, I noticed Super Duper Burgers tries to take a cheap shot at your masculinity to make you buy more food. Their normal burger is a half a pound of hamburger meat — HALF A POUND. I ask you. No human in the world needs half a pound of ground beef in one meal. Their human-sized burger (the quarter pounder) is obviously cheaper, but is dubbed the Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny You're Not a Real Man Burger to try and shame you into getting the bigger one.

Every episode of "Fawlty Towers" feels so long even though they're all only 30 minutes. It took me a while to realize that's because nearly every line is a joke. They don't waste a single second of footage — nothing happens that isn't funny. The upshot is that every episode of "Fawlty Towers" crams in the plot and jokes of about 3 episodes of a mediocre sitcom like "Big Bang Theory" or "Modern Family". Watching "Fawlty Towers" side-by-side with most current sitcoms is just embarrassing. Which isn't me being a curmudgeon — current shows like "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" and "Rick and Morty" are equally dense with jokes and plot. It's just nice to realize how rare the real gems are.

Is it just me or are the two football players in "Horse Feathers" (1932) totally gay for each other? Two beefy men who live together, play football together, and go to speakeasies together. I haven't seen such gayness since the lamp and the clock radio in "The Brave Little Toaster". Yeah, I went there, they're clearly fucking too.

@ajroach42 I didn't mind the bits about the chief, but yeah I could do without that slightly on-the-nose racial joke. To be honest I'd never actually got that one until you pointed it out just now — I'm not originally from the US, so some cultural stuff still goes over my head.
-
@ajroach42 One of my all-time favorite movies! What was it that bugged you about the ending? I've never really minded it outside the obvious sexism, but that's kind of par for the course for a movie from that time.
It's one of the quieter moments, but one of the things that's always stuck with me is how Emeline, the least greedy character in the movie, is the first to find the big W. It's a sublime moment of irony, and she goes on this rather sweet (if naff) fantasy about what she'd do with the money before her dream gets crushed in less than five minutes. In a manic slapstick comedy, it's a very necessary moment of real heart, and it's the only genuinely sad part of the movie. It's very telling that in a movie they had to trim Buster Keaton out of because it was running overtime, they kept that quiet little moment.

I should learn Nahuatl. That would be a sensible use of my time.

@ajroach42 Oh man, I love comedy Westerns (proper Westerns can die in a fire, but send-ups are the best). I haven't seen this one, so thanks for the tip.

I've finally decided to put my domain stjo.hn to a little more use. It's been languishing with some subdomains for years because I never knew what to do with it, but now I'm thinking I like it more than the domain where I currently host my site, so screw it, I'll port everything over.
Starting with my Gopher phlog, because why not:
gopher://gopher.stjo.hn/
Snappy, ain't it?
What's more I read up that a question mark is completely valid in the first part of an email address, so if you feel adventurous you can email me at:
?@stjo.hn
And everyone's like, "Woooooah, what is that even, let us worship you as our new god." https://media.giphy.com/media/xT0xeJpnrWC4XWblEk/giphy.gif

@bouncinglime Alas, I don't have the space for it — and I'm too tall, judging by the measurements in the ad. I've been meaning to get a pennyfarthing one of these days, but it would have to be when I get a place big enough to keep it.

@bouncinglime I like to remind people from time to time what a bastard I am.

That time I accidentally pretended to be disabled. You can't make this stuff up.
Also readable on my #Gopher #phlog, if you're that way inclined:

We're long past Halloween, but screw it, Halloween isn't just a day, it's part of who you are. I'm keeping my Halloween screen name and listening to terrible music. I give you "Omar the Vampar":
