It looks like the Pleroma Matrix room has disappeared.

@Shamar @lunaterra Computer literacy should be taught, but not in terms of how to use Microsoft products. It should be taught like mathematics and children should understand the basics of how the internet works. Things like what is a protocol and what are the main protocols. How to make the simplest web page. How to write a hello world program or a very simple game. What is the difference between fixed storage and ram? What is the von Neumann architecture and a Turing machine. Things like that.
Like learning maths, not every child will go on to be a mathematician or programmer, but having the background knowledge gives the potential to make better decisions and be less susceptible to fallacies and marketing scams as an adult.

@dublinux @Tutanota What I said was that for now it's possible to enable "less secure apps" but who knows for how long Google will allow you to do that. It might be that some time in future they just turn off IMAP support altogether so that you're forced to use their apps in the manner they deem to be "secure". Transitioning to another email provider might be wise, but all for-profit providers tend to start doing this type of thing eventually.
-
This might be a piece of news I missed, because I havn't been a Gmail user for a long time.
It looks like Google is now claiming that Thunderbird is an "insecure app" and turning off IMAP support - with predictably dire consequences for non-techy Gmail users who use Thunderbird as a client.
So it seems that Google is doing similar monopolistic lock-in stuff that Microsoft pioneered. Thunderbird of course doesn't display ads and so this is why Google want Gmail users using the web interface or some official Google email client which does show the ads.

There's an obvious parallel with the leftist idea of ownership of the means of production. What is the means of production in the digital era? Its the computers, the networks, the devices and the software that runs on them.
Also @aral makes a good point about changing the success criteria. Success in a decentralized system means something different from success in the Silicon Valley startup frame.
-
@Nezchan Why yes, it is a terrible idea.
The ultimate destination of subscribing to blocklists is something like spamhaus. Also you can be certain that if introduced it will be gamed.

@lunasspecto Some projects like sandstorm do have a container type of approach, but I don't see much advantage to it. Containers tend to add complexity without much gain.

@sim @dtluna Building new structures looks like building the fediverse while silo systems continue to exist, or building community networks alongside conventional ISPs.
Also I don't think the moderates vs radicals dialectic is very helpful because there aren't any good definitions. A lot of what passes for the status quo these days is highly disruptive and not exactly what anyone would call moderate.

@uuim @lynnesbian @paulfree14 I've tried magnetic connectors in the past and they're usually not great and somewhat leaky.

@jeffcliff [In Orwell voice] There is however a distinction to be made between challenging reading and allowing oneself to become brainwashed by reactionaries of the most scurrilous variety.
-
@jeffcliff I don't have any first hand experience with 4chan, but I read that in the last few years it got taken over by nazis. If that's the case then it's a target rich environment and I'd advocate for sabotage rather than censorship. Pull the rug out from under their platform.
-
@jeffcliff What kind of censorship?
-
@debugninja Good luck. I've had long exam-like interviews, but not all day.

@deejoe Orwell's book on his time in the Spanish civil war gives an overview of the various left wing factions involved and their complaints against each other. He describes the absurdity of many of the events, especially including the way in which his chosen Marxist faction was demonized and then persecuted at the end.
You can see the same kinds of rhetoric which have occurred in recent times, such as the people who fought bravely against what now often gets called "actual fascists" later being accused of being "the real fascists".
Then as now, the anarchists are pretty much hated and mischaracterized by all the other groups, but Orwell says he would have preferred to have joined them if it weren't for some technicalities.
-
"It seemed queer, in the barberβs shop, to see the Anarchist notice still on the wall, explaining that tips were prohibited. βThe Revolution has struck off our chains,β the notice said. I felt like telling the barbers that their chains would soon be back again if they didnβt look out."
-- George Orwell, Homage to Catalonia
