Hate this reliance of colleague's code on proprietary MATLAB which won't even do pipes or sockets out of the box without some sort of add-on. Octave is slow though. Rewrite in FORTRAN or Julia...?

Reading ancient Egyptian history I've become aware that people tend to lump it all together as if it were an unchanging continuity but it evolved over thousands of years. Written language hadn't been invented at the time of the first pharaoh, nor had the Egyptian gods.
-
@nepfag Can't argue with that.

Life-size sheet copper statue of pharaoh Pepi I (ruled around 2300BC). Along with the statue of a royal child found alongside it, the oldest known life-sized metal statue in the world. #Egypt #ancientegypt https://shitposter.club/attachment/1523270

Calling python experts - what's the best way of packaging a program that is not really a single program but a set of tools, some written in python and some in other languages? (Tempted to just ship a tarball and tell users what libraries they need.)

@clacke @h @h @cstanhope Windoze wasn't created for devs, it was created for lusers.

@clacke I guess awk is a 'do one thing and do it well' kind of tool. Awesome domain-specific language for what it was designed for. perl is the Pathologically Eclectic Rubbish Lister - what it says on the tin.

@clacke Isn't that why perl was invented tho?

@bob @imncls I used to not think much about accessibility till my accommodation started to deteriorate (30+ years of staring at monitors nearly every day?) and a friend pointed out that many (most?) of us will need some sort of accessibility assistance as we reach old age. And a friend losing a limb and use of another in an auto accident drove the point home even more.
-
@bob @imncls I have a 37" 4k monitor at work and had the tiny fonts problem but accessibility settings sorted that out. OTOH a colleague recommends at least 40" for 4k monitors (make the whole thing physically bigger).

Free Casio VL-Tone /VL1 emulator as a VST plugin (Windows only). http://www.polyvalens.com/blog/vl-1/
-
The VL-Tone demo song was listed as a German folk song but is in fact a Japanese children's song Yama no Ongakuka (about animals playing music in a forest). https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=be2ahgAAEZQ
-
Remember a friend getting a Casio VL-Tone and wondering 'great but what the hell can you do with it?' Didn't stop at least one band using it successfully. Artists limited by imagination, not tools. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lNYcviXK4rg

@bob I use the decentraleyes add-on for Firefox which is supposed to supply locally bundled versions of things like jquery instead of fetching them from Google and the like. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/decentraleyes/

Even within a relatively simple web app like Edith notes I notice that there's Google stuff once again - fonts and jquery links.
Google links hardcoded into Free Software apps is a problem, because it allows the company to spy on the activities of users. Not the content, but who uses what and how often.

Painting from the tomb-chapel of Nebamun (c. 1350BC), showing him fowling with wife Hatshepsut and young daughter. Unlike the tombs of royalty, no gods are shown. Pictures are painted rather than engraved, so rather more lively. (Note the cat.) (British Museum)
