Modern software running on mainstream computing systems is insecure as fuck, wastes energy and resources, and works against the personal, social, and economic interests of most people.

It's about time we start to abandon these systems and their shackles, not just social media alone.

Eventually web browsers and mainstream PCs and mobile devices need to be seriously rethought as well.

@wakarimasen @mayuutann Not tried it myself but a friend swears by it - rather than at it, which is a good sign.

@thatbrickster I wonder if it might be due to needing to provide notifications. On mobile you have to either rely on Google or Apple push services, a third-party, roll your own or poll in the background (better if you can keep a long TCP connection open to the server). If you're averse to Google/Apple then in reality polling is the only option. XMPP now has a push extension but it requires server support. That said, I haven't had much of a battery problem with Conversations. Things are worse on iOS where I understand the OS will kill long running background tasks so you can't just keep a TCP connection open to the server in the background. Apple's mail client has to resort to real polling, and the ChatSecure notifications are poor to nonexistent.
Here's an old read that's a good primer.

I could be spouting bollocks though, so would welcome corrections to my limited understanding.

    Richard Stallman.

Reclaim your freedom with free libre software - Richard Stallman of Free Software Foundation urges not to use Facehook, whatsdat, Twatter etc. since they are monstrous surveillance engines designed to work against people and our interest.

This is contemporary and legendary altogether. Linux related.

@rook @Framasoft @angristan FSF doesn’t have a patent on ethics. Open source, however, is notable for having come into existence as an allergic reaction to the ethics and morality in free software by businesses that did not want ethics or morality to impede their ability to fence off the commons, adopt free as in free labour, and implement open as privatisation.

@maiyannah Agree. Not everyone is like RMS and can simply adapt the system to their use given the source code. Even for those who can, it can involve a high expenditure of time and effort.

I don't abhor people using the systems they must to perform their jobs or make their living, but I do wish that there were better free software systems.  While many of the zealots will likely disagree with me, it is not simply enough for me that there be free software system equivalents.  They need to be as high quality as the proprietary equivalents or near thereto.  Otherwise the only people who use them are those willing to make sacrifices for their freedom, and that is exceedingly few individuals in the end.

2/ Julia is a damn sight more modern and flexible while claiming to offer decent performance and you can use jupyter notebook, but I don't know it. FORTRAN on the other hand is tried and trusted - maybe boring but a known entity. (And ifort is shit fast on Intel CPUs.)
