@1iceloops123 Yeah. Losing the sense of touch is dangerous. It would be easy to get badly hurt and not know it until it was too late to save one's life.
@dude@tk It looks like the first few bites would be yummy, until your insides said NO MORE SUGAR and organs you didn't even know you had started hurting.
@tk Oh, man. He should have found a Taco Bell, spent a dollar on some dog meat in a shell, and used their facilities. What if, even without the cops catching him speeding, he still couldn't get home in time?
@feld Oh, we definitely do not have enough masks, but they said early on that surgeon-style masks are not shown to be effective against airborne virus transmission. Having said that, I would wear said mask if I could get one if / when COVID-19 starts spreading in the US.
@mike One thing that #SARS-CoV-2 has that original SARS-CoV didn't: It is contagious before it is symptomatic. So even with its lower mortality rate, it infects a lot more people, resulting in a higher body count.
I would never get in such a contraption either. I was also surprised to find that the FAA claimed it has no jurisdiction. I expected FAA and DoD approval to be necessary before a launch.
@devurandom It probably depends on what the local transit system is like. Los Angeles will need to spend billions of dollars building a better public transit system before it is a viable replacement for cars. On the other hand, my friends in New York City do not own cars because they don't need them there.
@gamehawk@clacke I did see that 68 children died of flu (mostly H1N1) in the US so far this season, but I don't know whether that's above or below normal. (That was on the CDC site a couple of weeks ago.)
As for the question "What determines whether people will freak out or not?", I imagine it is the way that it is portrayed in the news and by the nation's leaders. And how long it has been since the last "this virus will kill us all" scare.
I know that my youngest grandson's doctor said that as long as the child is not going places where he will be exposed, he recommends not getting the flu shot for 2 years and under. (Sadly, the doc's opinion has greater weight than grandpa's, so "take that baby in and get him a flu shot" was ignored.)
@feld That was a #Digital_Ocean change and one of the reasons I don't use them any more. I had multiple "droplets" paid annually (with a different prepaid card, but still prepaid) and suddenly I couldn't pay for them without giving them a regular card.
@moonman@lain Pztrn (founder of LoadAverage) and XJ9, among others, said it was a hassle. I'm happy Lain hosts one, but until I hear that it's improved a lot, I won't be doing it.
