@nolan Ah -- so this is what my coworkers were talking about on group chat yesterday. I'm so insulated from social media today that 1) I had no idea what they were talking about, 2) immediately ignored what they were saying about "IHOP changing its name" as either false, or completely unimportant. :\

There is so much nuance that will never be possible on social media, and especially with things like empathy and governance of a society (I don't separate the two), social media just seems to be making it much harder, and the results much worse.

@extropic @nolan Your comment about facial expressions coming naturally, and that being a very necessary tool for effectively communicating emotion, really hit home for me.

It's the root of why, in 2016, I decided never to talk politics with anyone unless anymore I was literally communicating face to face.

@naugeleh No problem -- full disclosure: I am in the eBook publishing business. :p I have nearly a decade of experience dealing with these companies, and have so, so many weird stories about them all.

@naugeleh I would recommend the Kobo store as well. It's owned by Rakuten, which bought the leftover IP that used to be the Borders book company. They make very good readers, and have great support across the world, and seem to actually like the eBooks.

Stay far, far away from Barnes and Noble -- the company is antagonistic against eBooks today, even though they still make hardware and produce apps.

Also, I'd stay away from the Apple store for eBooks, since you have to have an iOS device.

@staticsafe @trwnh Thank you for doing your part in keeping Canada a decent place. Everyone in the States pretty much looks up to Canada as like a saner relative (even those that pretend not to).

@trwnh @staticsafe It's tough. The line at the end of the article about how democracies have a time limit of around 200 years really hit home. Can't really think of one that's lasted much longer.

@staticsafe Yeah, I see a notice at the bottom of the page that says something akin to "you can read three articles for free", but after that one needs to pay $5USD. I find this on an article about why journalism is dying interesting. :p

@nolan Hey, has there been any problems with Pinafore since Masto 2.4.0 went out? I noticed that Pinafore stopped working with my site when I upgraded.

@switchingsocial Just for fun I tried to follow one link on that article to see if I could disable Windows keylogging, and I notice the instructions are already out of date.

Not the articles fault: Windows seems to change around the organization of the settings screen every few months.

I wonder if it's to render the instructions on articles such as these obsolete as quickly as possible? :P

...am I the only person enjoying all these GDPR emails? Everytime I get one, I'm like, "Yes: another company brought to task."

@Gargron @Julia I would say just rent a car, but I just checked on flight prices in the EU, and they're amazingly cheap compared to what I'm used to, holy crap.

@Gargron @Julia If I lived in the EU and needed to go to London from Berlin, I'd totally drive. :p I've done that before for business trips in the States.

@Gargron Depending on the airline, it will either let you choose at purchase, or 24 hours before the flight time, when you "check in". Some airlines don't let you choose at all, though.
