did you know that in order for blocking and other features to be relevant the thing has to actually work first? if it cannot route messages, what is the point
but I guess that implementing support for S2S blocks, which are a Mastodon extension, was the most important thing and our lack of doing so clearly demonstrates that there is some conspiracy to create tools to harass people, and I guess something about dtluna too (who never had commit access btw)
by the way, I was being harassed by somebody who considered the fact that none of that functionality had been implemented yet to be an active feature and was using it to stalk people (Karen for example), the usual players who come to flame us certainly didn't come to flame that guy. 🤔
I'm also disappointed that it was started by somebody who I previously considered to be above that sort of thing
anyway, just because Pleroma doesn't do X doesn't mean it's a plot or an intentional thing, it just means nobody has worked on it yet: Pleroma got mitigations to prevent stalking because people were using it to do just that, if the goal of the project was to create a software for "harassing people on the Fediverse" then why were mitigations put in as soon as it became a known problem?
at any rate instead of spreading FUD and having a discourse today, I suggest spending some nice time outside, at least where I am, it's pretty nice
earlier this year, for a few reasons, I was pretty depressed (I basically quit working in tech and decided to recenter on things I was actually interested in, which was largely inspired by a large chunk of my life savings got burned by a techbro when they were supposed to be saving the business, it's a long story, I've talked about it before)...
and, honestly, being able to participate in a project like Pleroma at that time was very helpful in terms of getting my mind back into a happier place.
sometimes, you need something *new* and *different* in order to get excited about things again...
so, I am glad that @lain started this thing, it has been very fun to hack on, I've learned a new programming language, made contributions to a W3C standard and I've also made a lot of friends in the process. not bad, if I do say so myself...
Indeed, but not all GNU Social instances are bad or evil, and I think most Mastodon users do recognize that.
In fact, the vast majority of GNU social instances are filled with friendly people who share the same values that typical Mastodon users have.
Similarly, if you look at the whole spectrum of Pleroma instances, you'll find that it is basically the same scenario as Mastodon and GNU Social, there are extreme instances using all three softwares, but in reality, most instances are just small, friendly instances with friendly people who just like to have a nice time. In fact, I had a bad interaction with a neo-nazi using Mastodon on Sunday.
In recent months, the discourse that Pleroma is some evil plot to do whatever has mostly died out. I think this is because we have proven that isn't the case. It's just software.
the Pleroma community ethos is not the same as the ethos of the GNU social instances that Mastodon hates. the Pleroma community ethos is one of finding solutions to problems and keeping out the bullshit, whatever that may be.
yes, it is a different ethos to that of Mastodon, but it is an appropriate ethos considering what we're trying to build -- software anyone is entitled to use and contribute to.
everyone is nice in the Pleroma community, even if they are not necessarily nice in the fediverse, because not being nice means that you will be ignored
what i am saying, is that the journeyman system would yield more proficient developers than what we do now. because i have worked with new graduates and they are basically worthless and have to be properly trained *anyway*. so why not skip the student debt?
I was dropping acid and reading "Hacker" "News" in my office at Spamly, the latest Silicon Valley unicorn, when a call came in via SlackDiscordMatterMost, a recently created corporate communications conglomerate.
It was the CEO. "Bad news, devs. We've got a situation."
"What? Is Brendan Eich trying to oppress the gays again?"
"Worse. I don't know which command is necessary to cover up the millions of dollars I stole from these venture capitalists. They're going to be pissed when they find out the money is gone."
"Well, you could try reading a man page..."
"WHAT GOOD IS THAT GOING TO DO ME?! I NEED A SYSTEM TO TELL ME WHAT MAN PAGE IS RELEVANT. AND IT NEEDS TO BE WEB SCALE BECAUSE I NEED TO DO THIS A LOT," the CEO yelled.
"What about apro..."
"I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT IS AND I DON'T CARE, IT'S NOT FUCKING WEB SCALE. I NEED A SOLUTION, PEOPLE, AND I NEED ONE NOW, OR WE'RE ALL OUT ON THE STREET!"
"Well, we could write a tool using ElasticSearch to find the necessary man page you're looking for... I could write a rails application, but I will need at least 10 servers for the ElasticSearch cluster so we can ensure maximum uptime of this mission critical service."
"LOOK, YOU HAVE A BLANK CHECK TO DO WHAT YOU'VE GOT TO DO. JUST GET IT DONE."
And with that, the CEO disconnected the call, the developer wrote a blog post about the system and started circulating their resume as to have a new job lined up at the next unicorn.
1. mastodon and pleroma aren't at war with each other. that is largely a war of the fringe, and is best ignored. if you stay out of only one discourse this year, make it this one.
2. more fediverse software is better than less. if you want to develop an AP server, now is a great time to do it!
3. i owe you all some simplified docs, because i keep promising them. but i hate writing things. so, eventually they will arrive. sorry it is taking so long!
Mastodon admins: if you have trouble with a Pleroma instance and you wish for somebody to help mediate the dispute, I am open to helping with that as well. I understand both "sides" of many disputes and will try to assist with reaching a mutually beneficial outcome.
Open dialogue is the best way to solve problems before they become serious.
We really want to work together to make the fediverse a good space for everyone.
