It's ridiculous. The idea of self-moderation was brought about by the big tech companies because they don't want to pay for moderators to keep their platforms safe.

Without some controls and higher authorities, things descend into a hostile cesspool, and well intentioned people will leave. That's why Reddit and Twitter are so awful, and are overrun with trolls and bots -- they have practically no rules or moderators.

@deadsuperhero @wilw I can't tell if you're kidding. 🙂 I still think it's fair to say that no one invites harassment or any sort of abuse.

Harassment and abuse are the fault of the people who perpetrate it, regardless of how "tempting" whatever prompted the abuse was.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm lecturing you (not my intention and I hope it does not sound that way), especially if you're kidding. 😄

I don't understand why online discourse is sometimes so rotten, mean spirited and adversarial. It makes me want to sign off and not come back.

Hmm...wilw drama. I just thought he was a geek who wrote some stuff and was B-list famous after Star Trek TNG. Seems maybe he's, um, deeply problematic. I don't have the energy to dig into this right now, but probably should inform myself soon.

We should be welcome to respectfully disagree with each other. I have been respectful to you in my communications, but you have not been respectful to me back. You appear to be claiming that your view is the only correct one, and that those who disagree with you are harmful and need to do more research.

That's the whole point of the statement you quoted.

I would ask if you have qualifications, but I have no reason to care, just as you have no reason to care about mine.
