If you think something can be dismantled and later reassembled, and still be the same thing as before it was dismantled, then why wouldn't it be?

Suppose both of these ships exist at the same time. Which is the original ship? Is either?

The answer is, of course, that it depends. Identity is just a convenience, something we impose on the world to make sense of it. Those atoms don't care what they are.

The famous Ship of Theseus thought experiment demonstrates how the concept of identity is mutable.

It goes something like this: suppose every part of a ship is replaced, one by one, until none of the original parts remain. Is it the same ship? Most people would say so.

Let's say someone else keeps each part as it is removed, and then uses them to build a ship to exactly the original specification. Is it the same ship?

i'm not against an instance 'not welcoming' whomever they like, it just that mastosoc tries to be both a very modern-lefty instance and the general entrypoint for everybody into the fediverse.

    Who wins Election 2019 under a ranked-ballot system? #PhilippeJFournier in #Macleans
    https://www.macleans.ca/politics/ottawa/who-wins-election-2019-under-a-ranked-ballot-system/

The short answer [0]: it wouldn't change the end results much. For me, the fact that ranked ballots give results similar to first-past-the-post is one of their advantages.

[0] The major flaw in the model is that it doesn't account for a voter who strategically voted for her second preference.

@strypey Many people said that in Canada, and now we're wondering what counts as suffering, what it means to be terminally ill, and whether my voluntary decision now should outweigh my voluntary will later. Not as easy questions as they first appear

Orwell on *Gulliver's Travels*: "In a Society in which there is no law, and in theory no compulsion, the only arbiter of behaviour is public opinion. But public opinion [...] is less tolerant than any system of law. When human beings are governed by ‘thou shalt not’, the individual can practise a certain amount of eccentricity: when they are supposedly governed by ‘love’ or ‘reason’, he is under continuous pressure to make him behave and think in exactly the same way as everyone else."
