For #FairDealingWeek there is a petition to the Canadian government initiated by the Canadian Association of University Teachers (CAUT) to prevent a bad reworking of copyright. http://copyright.caut.ca/petition — please spread the word!

      Fair Copyright Campaign
      from CAUT Fair Copyright
Copyright regulates an essential part of academic life - the creation, ownership and use of literary and artistic works. Educators have worked hard to ensure the law serves the public good – protecting both the creators and users of material and allowing ready access to learning and research content. As parliament undertakes a review of the Copyright Act, this balance must be defended, and new rights advanced. Join CAUT and academic staff from across Canada in advocating for fair copyright.

The sheer number of people on Facebook with their real names, photos, locations and workplaces on their profile who are happy to throw abuse at other people kinda disproves the argument that it’s online anonymity that causes abusive behaviour

I could suggest a short story along those lines, if horror were your desire...

Instead, I suggest that you look at *The Better Angels of Our Nature* by Steven Pinker and *Nonzero* by Robert Wright. Things aren't so bad now, and they're probably getting better. Though of course even positive trends may come to an end...

(I confess that I haven't read either book yet.)

    @George
There's a lot of truth to the "lex orandi, lex credendi" principle; personally, I've found Mass in Latin very moving whenever I go, both OF and EF.

But at the end of the day what you get out of Mass is largely a function of what you put in: liturgical forms are insufficient to deepen faith. But grace is always there for those who are well-disposed.

@George A more interesting comparison would be between those who go to EF every Sunday and those who go to OF weekly. This study appears to take all the lukewarm Catholics and throw them into the OF bin, so naturally those in that bin aren't very faithful.

It's not fair to blame #concrete for foolish construction projects or for corruption in public works; OTOH the point about CO2 emissions from cement production is absolutely correct.

Oddly the writer missed the problem that concrete is highly alkaline, and thus that unhardened concrete is toxic.

What are some good French novels?

My favorite author is Murakami, and I'm a big fan of dystopias and cyperpunk i.e. William Gibson type of stuff.

While thousands of users hang out and talk about software development on Mastodon.technology, they can also follow and interact with cat lovers over on Toot.cat, the same way Gmail users can exchange messages with Outlook users.

I want to get a little annoyed at the #French, but they seem to just honestly be unable to understand any French but their own.

This kind of one-way intelligibility isn't that uncommon in #linguistics, yet this one being nearer to me kind of smarts a little.

    #GospelToday (Mt 16:15-19)
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."

Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
