Thanks mastodon, seriously. I’m assisting a student who wants their record changed to reflect their chosen gender and the everyday way this is practised here has taught me how to use the language needed to get this done.

I’m better at my job because I’ve been included here.

That’s pretty bad. It’s hard to think of something cheering to say.

For years I have dodged work projects that say “we’ll be using Facebook”. I’ve made brief explanatory speeches about boycotting while escaping, and it’s been ok. But it’s been like being the vegan at a barbecue.

But I’ve noticed a change. More people say they feel the same. Is it worth asking?

That’s an interesting comparison. I work closely with a serious endurance athlete who eats strictly, in a measured and time sensitive way.

My respect for both my colleagues is the same, but I don’t think what they’re doing is necessarily the same.

Respecting both isn’t a big task.

I now think differently about Ramadan. Muslim colleagues have given me insight into what takes it beyond diet plan for them.

So he asked nothing of us, but maybe we could have been considerate of his practice if we’d remembered and handled it differently, and it would have done us no harm at all.

Nice outcome: for next year he will record a short video for us about Ramadan experience to support our Muslim students, who are similarly in small number.

It started spontaneously about a year ago as a stretch into the length of toots after the confines of Twitter.

Constantly surprising bits of human noticing.

My 17 year old daughter gets up in the winter dark for her 6am shift at the checkout, and I’m not quite beyond listening for her motorbike to set off safely.

After she leaves I lie in bed listening to the podcast that’s still playing somewhere under the pillows. It’s something about happiness and football tournaments. Economists of happiness have done the sums.

Apparently adult happiness declines to 26, and then starts to pick up.

I walked in yesterday after a long day at work. The quality of light in my daughter’s room was so peaceful. But nothing captured it. None of these images (iPhone with dusty lens) fully condense the way that it felt standing in her empty room, looking out of the window.
