@fgraver @lauraritchie @dadegroot My dedicated talented friend is still in shock. I think she is starting to feel that those around her who haven’t lost their jobs are at a loss for words when it comes to her.

@lauraritchie @dadegroot It seems to be a contagion, this treating people like business problems to be fixed.

But it actually makes less sense from a business perspective than you’d think. Our workplaces run on goodwill. We are throwing out the thing that actually makes us work.

I realise I put this here because I feel this has been a compassionate environment for me. It’s not a work place. I am not my work self here.

I realise reading your words that mastodon has been all about people’s circumstances, not their status, not their jobs.

I realise I don’t know what you do but I know you through what you make.

I want work to be remade.

@johnribbon There is none. It’s genuinely sadly awful.

Things are really tough at work. Someone we all love has been made redundant in a big restructure. A small, tightly-knit team is rocked with grief. There seems no point to it. She is walking through the workplace dazed.

There's no good ending to this. It's the way work is unravelling, and humans are being thrown out of workplaces where they are cherished.

"All my friends are here," she said to me, stunned. It's been 25 years.

@RussSharek Yes, same. I loved reading about his continued activist thinking, but also his knowing that enough getting about is enough.

@Gargron For me it’s maths exams, if that helps.

@RussSharek To one side of this, I also love his activism on free access to art.

@qui_oui Believe me, I was also thinking: chainsaw. I couldn’t fathom his determination to be at my table. Now I know and my table is covered in leaflets.

Here’s the thing. He discovered the West Papuan crisis on the internet. He was compelled to act so he went to the guy who prints his tree business fridge magnets and got a huge pile of leaflets made at his own expense to give to his tree-lopping customers.

Anyhow activism. We’ve all got it.
