We had another bass player try out for the band last night. This is the ... ummm ... fifth bass player in about six months we've had come in. He could play, but it just wasn't the right fit. Funny how the intangibles surface quickly. It's not just Music. It's also the Mesh. discussions afterwards indicated we were all on the same page. Good bass player. Not for us. So, back to looking for someone to anchor our rock and roll band, as we continue to expand our repertoire of songs. #smallstories

“What better way than mixtapes to respond? The stories you can tell by putting the right songs in the right sequence for the right person.”

@tellio Dang. Glad to hear you are the mend. Sorry to hear it has been rough, particularly given your farming season at hand. Your daydream of lilies had me in the moment.

The other day, I stumbled upon a class picture from when I was in the very same grade as I now teach. Sixth grade. I remember the 11-year-old me from then because I so clearly remember my teacher from that year -- Mr. Dudak. He did not seem to often follow school rules, was always cheering us as individuals, and found the means to celebrate our classroom in unorthodox ways. I remember the sense of adventure more than anything else. I hope I have a bit of Mr. D in me. #smallstories

@rebeccamidd It's insane, the idea of arming teachers, on so many levels that I can't even begin to list the ways things could go terribly wrong. It's yet another lever the NRA is pulling on Trump. (NRA has been advocating arming teachers since Sandy Hook. Some schools in Ohio have already done so.)

You know the paper you need is here. Somewhere. You look at the pile of documents over there. The pile in the middle drawer. The pile by the phone. The one near the computer. Where did all these stacks of paper come from, you wonder? You know. They came from you, and now in a burst of frustration over a paper-not-found, you start to organize. Until you find the paper you couldn't find. The stacks get left behind, for another time. And so, the day begins, in metaphor. #smallstories

What winter clothes,
the trees wear
this morning ...
all silvery white
shimmer,
enveloped
with the golden glow
of the sun:
a soft spotlight

When our kids were young, building forts in the living and dining room was great fun. There'd be quilts and blankets for ceilings and chairs for walls. Yesterday, my 13 year old and his friend decided to build a fort, just ... because. It was fun to watch them convert the entire living room into a soft structure. My wife and I looked on with the wonder of memory. You hold on to childhood (and your own children's childhood) as much as you can. #smallstories https://mastodon.social/media/2Tgj9tcwLCI6D-oL52w

I was watching a doc w/ John Mellencamp. He was talking how "Art is so often unexpected." So it is. Last night, I was frustrated w/ music. Same chords. Same sound. A wall of nothing. So I open-tuned, added a capo, started strumming with no plan. A strange chord turn-around that my fingers found by pure accident caught my ear. I paid attention, twisting the chord until my fingers hurt. I followed my ears. Within an hour, a new song slowly emerged from the kernels of that mistake. #smallstories

I'm in a room classroom educators learning about tech. I'm a participant, although normally, I facilitate these kinds of tech sessions. My writing project colleague, Tom, is the facilitator today. I'm paying attention to the ways we are all helping each other to learn. The range of experience is pretty significant. What some us consider a slight shift in thinking, others see as a widening gap they can barely see across. All of us take steps forward, with support of each other. #smallstories

“... I try to see as much as possible -- in microscopic detail. I have an exercise that helps me with this, using old family photographs. I’ll blow an image up as much as I can, and work through it pixel by pixel.”
