Lucky listen today: https://youtu.be/Ymsb_4Z3uy0 Or was it? In our age of algorithms can anything online be called"lucky"? Tell me, when was the last time you got lucky in the world and found 200 bucks tucked away in a CD jewel box in a second hand store? Yeah, me never. Yeah, me never.
My daughter is home from her travelling nurse gig. She gets to see her niece, her Kentucky friends, her brother and sister-in-law, and her parents. Imagine my surprise as she appeared at my door while I was doing student conferences yesterday. A smart, refreshing break. #smallstories
Love/hate: student conferences. Last hope/lost hope: student conferences. All day for three days: student conferences. How can the most humane meetup in all the world also make me want to be a hermit: student conferences. These may be the ONLY one-on-one tutorials my students get the entire first year at university: student conferences. God help them/God help me: student conferences. #smallstories
We call it the powerline walk. It's a three-mile out and back walk that we have doing for almost as long as the thirty years we have lived in our hollar. Every walk has been a sample of one. As we walked up the gravel road to the house I was stopped by the mid-morning October gold light striking the rogue maple in our front yard. It is a glory done a grave injustice by this photo, but there it is. #smallstories
@Shufei Each of us needs to find his or her own blessed last scene. The power lines didn't bother me, but sometimes they do. Thanks for the online warmth.
I am seated impatiently on the tailgate of my truck for my wife to go on a walk with me. I roll over on my side. It is sunny and breezy and warm and comfortable. I look up through a cloud of falling leaves with a deep blue background. The chat of leaves lulls me not to sleep but to life. No words but these: as I die I want to remember this image, no words, just this image. It will be enough. #smallstories
I get to vote today on a fellow instructor's application to rise to "Instructor II" on the organizational chart. That amounts to not even a little increase in job security, but it does add a little to the paycheck. I am going to say every positive thing I can say regarding her teaching work. We teach ten classes a year so that our tenured colleagues can do their thing. And I hope to God that my colleagues realize this. University self-governance--what an oxymoron! #smallstories
It is barely dawn. I hear the distant retort of a gun. I think: who gets up this early to kill shit. I hunkered down on that thought for a long, considering moment....My imagination fails. You know, that is likely going to be the death of me in the apocalypse. I can't imagine why anyone would want to kill shit at the ass-crack of dawn. I hear sirens and have no trouble imagining that same gun-toting fool as having shot himself accidentally or perhaps by someone else on purpose. . #smallstories
