Those damn placeholders will always get you
“A three kilometer-long space ship laid out like an early 2000s era website:
* NAV at the top/front/head of the ship
* drive section in the FOOTER
* left-hand nav running all the way down the length of the ship
* a CAROUSEL to replicate gravity
* powered by COLDFUSION”
Cats do indeed have 9 lives. The other 8 are on an n-dimensional hyperplane intersecting our universe
And that's why they sometimes stare off into a distance for no particular reason
“The Maltese Falcon” (1941) and “Dude, Where's My Car?” (2000) utilize the same primary plot driving technique known as a “MacGuffin”
An object is sought for various reasons which renders challenges and other events for the protagonists and antagonists
TIL There are music typewriters and they came in all sorts of shapes, sizes, and mechanisms
Want!
Oh snap!
“10 years ago today:
• jQuery was battling Dojo, YUI, and mootools for dominance
• node.js wasn't a thing
• Firebug was the only real developer tool
• Chrome wasn't released yet
• nobody took JavaScript devs seriously
Things change a lot in 10 years.”
Sometimes, I don’t understand you, Internet
"Facebook Gave Device Makers Deep Access to Data on Users and Friends"
Subtitle is even better:
"The company formed data-sharing partnerships with Apple, Samsung and dozens of other device makers, raising new concerns about its privacy protections.""
"...Facebook allowed the device companies access to the data of users’ friends without their explicit consent, even after declaring that it would no longer share such information with outsiders."
Microsoft won’t “kill” GutHub. It’s not an email service, or blog platform, or web browser, or Bob
This is a non-trivial cornerstone of web and other software development (and that should have been the problem in the first place). A large publicly traded company with a history of scrutiny isn’t going to be as reckless with it as people think. Especially not as much a private company could
Also, folks are behaving as if #GitHub had flawless reputation before the acquisition
This is a living room concept by Alex Harris. I love these types of isometric views. There's an old-school computer on the desk and that's especially endearing
The screen actually shows the "Welcome to Windows" popup when you first run Windows 98
“Your Body Has A ‘Second Brain’ In Your Butt, Scientists Say”
http://denver.cbslocal.com/2018/05/31/second-brain-butt-scientists/
“Researchers discovered that the neurons in the digestive system fire in synchronized blasts, which propel waste out of the body. This is the same way neurons in the brain fire as they send signals throughout the body.”
Good news, everyone!
You’re already a smartass

This is a pretty comprehensive series of someone who bought a decommissioned underground missile silo (a Titan-II) and is in the process of turning it into a home
It's pretty long, but all the trials and tribulations are there
I believe there are several such silos for sale in the UK too
@resist_berlin Oh, this is wonderful! Thanks :D
@cypnk Did you see this?
@troubleMoney This one by Arron Whitehead (AKA Hazzard65) is still my favorite example
@cypnk find some woods with a lake in them, get building a wooden underwater vehicle then run fibre to it
you'll get to cross off "small submarine", "cabin in the woods", and "hacker bunker" all at once
@freakazoid I'd feel too guilty if I never managed to get to orbit for the DIY space station if I'm a few dollars short 😭
I was counting on Copenhagen Suborbitals to get ahead, but their project has hit a few snags too
