So the project that comes closest to a decent open source camera is the AXIOM project

    https://apertus.org/

Except for the physical sensor itself, the hardware appears to #opensource. So is the software

It seems to be mostly a complete project including the lenses

Unfortunately, the whole thing is very expensive. Way outside the budget of most film hobbyists

But I wonder if it's possible to make some of the components less expensively

@freakazoid Oh sorry, that's my mistake. I should have been more clear. Yeah, open source hardware is a pickle for the most part. There's just so much money going into fabs, it's probably the last place they'd release it

Not quite the 24MP of the Fuji, but there appears to be an #OpenSource image sensor as part of the AXIOM project that delivers 12MP and 4K capability. It's also APS-C albeit smaller res

@cypnk I went to a small farming village in India about 5 years ago. Many didn't have internet access, but the ones who did had fiber.

And these weren't necessarily the wealthier people in the village either. I've no doubt Africa can leapfrog in similar ways

    This is an interesting perspective

“If you are interested in the future of the internet (a popular synonym for economy), study deeply what's going on in Africa right now. Its way more futuristic than anything silicon valley has to offer. A master class in resilient network design for post climate change realities.”

I wonder if not having infrastructure was a blessing in disguise. Normally, you’ll be pulling out what exists to upgrade. But if nothing exists, your only hard limit is funding

@mdhughes Man, I’m the opposite (except cheese, which is the food of the gods). I love milk. I think it’s all the processing that takes the flavor away

When I was in Sri Lanka, I had a chance to have fresh milk and it was delicious. Obviously, the problem is hygiene and if I didn’t trust the farmer, there’s no way I’d have any

This is the new FujiFilm mirrorless X-T100

It has a 24.2 megapixel CMOS APS-C sensor that can give pretty nice 1080p and 4k video (limited to 15fps in the latter). This style of camera body has been the classic as far back as I can remember

The things is, the specific combination of components is hard to put together, but the individual components (body, lens(es), adapters, software) are possible to duplicate individually

CNCs that can churn out decent parts are around. Sensor is the issue

    Graphing calculators are a racket

The thing has been the same for decades, has an ancient CPU, little memory, rubbish screen

    Still costs $100 or more
    Costs them $15 - $20 to make

Don’t give me that “standard” nonsense. The TI camp does everything possible to keep new generations (and teachers) hooked on the same device when better, cheaper alternatives exist

There seems to be as many stories about the "correct" way to weld two pieces of metal as there are folklore tales from all the indigenous people of the world

Same for the "correct" way to start a fire, make soup/stew, chop firewood, select a programming language, build a tent, make soap etc... etc...

What is about human nature that makes us "discover" the one-true-way and proclaim it gospel

Why is it so hard to admit there's more than one right answer for some things

Patent troll, Personal Audio LLC, was defeated in court by #EFF again. Their appeal was rejected by the Supreme Court and podcasters are free from this blight in the US

EFF Wins Final Victory Over Podcasting Patent
      from Electronic Frontier Foundation
Back in early 2013, the podcasting community was freaking out. A patent troll called Personal Audio LLC had sued comedian Adam Carolla and was threatening a bunch of smaller podcasters. Personal Audio claimed that the podcasters infringed U.S. Patent 8,112,504, which claims a “system for...
