   @lxo I haven't bothered to read much about the bill, but I do not believe the courts will let it stand. As you point out, US based companies engage in similar data-gathering, both for private corporate purposes and for unconstitutional US federal purposes.
   
   They _could_ and _should_ ban such data-collection / data-sharing / data-selling, but I expect they will not.

   It's very cool and Singaporean that they even mix in Hokkien in the Mandarin lyrics!

   In most of the Chinese language space people treat different Chinese languages as if they're just different pronounciations, I pronounce it like this, you like that, but it's the "same word", but in Singapore people seem more aware of different Chinese cultural contexts and connotations. "Heng ong huat" is a particular phrase that has to be said in Hokkien, as the equivalent words are not an expression in Mandarin (?).

   I can't easily find exactly what the words "heng ong huat" mean etymologically, the hits I get online are very superficial and pragmatic and don't even mention the Chinese characters. It's not simply "gung hei faat choi" ("gong xi fa cai") pronounced in Hokkien, that would be "kiong-hí hoat-châi".

     Man mag Elon mögen oder nicht - ich selber mag ihn nicht. Aber das Starship wird - sollte es funktionieren - den Transport von Material und Personen ins All erheblich preiswerter machen. Und vor allem wird die Menge Müll pro Start massiv reduziert. Im Moment wird ja (mit Ausnahme von SpaceX und Rocket Lab) die erste Stufe nach dem Start im Meer versenkt (bzw. in China und Russland auf Land) und der Orbiter verglüht beim Wiedereintritt.

     Wenn das Starship funktioniert, wird das Vergangenheit sein. Und die anderen Raketenhersteller werden auch nachziehen, bzw. haben sie bereits damit angefangen.

     D.h. vor dem Gesichtspunkt der Müllvermeidung ist es sehr sinnvoll. Mal davon abgesehen, wird das Starship für die Artemis-Missionen (die Mond-Mission der NASA) benötigt.

     Mit dem Starship wird es auch möglich sein, Raumstationen leichter ins All zu befördern. Die Zeit der ISS ist bald vorbei und im All findet haufenweise Grundlagen- und angewandte Forschung statt. Das wird mit einem Transportmittel wie dem Starship einfacher und preiswerter.

     Sehe es andersherum: Hier wird eine voll wiederverwendbare Rakete getestet. Im Moment gibt es nur zwei Anbieter, die teilweise wiederverwendbare Raketen einsetzen. D.h. die allermeisten Raketen werden nur einmal eingesetzt. Rechne Dir aus, wie viel CO2 bei der Produktion dieser Wegwerfraketen entsteht. Und diese Rakete wird ja mit Methan statt mit Kerosin betrieben (die meisten Raketen verwenden Kerosin). D.h. der Treibstoff kann sogar prinzipiell komplett CO2-neutral hergestellt werden.

     Mal davon abgesehen ist die Menge an CO2 durch Raketenstarts im Vergleich zu allen anderen CO2-Erzeugern marginal. Der jährliche weltweite CO2-Ausstoß liegt derzeit bei etwa 37 Millionen Tonnen. Das Starship hat eine Tankkapazität von etwa 1.200 Tonnen. Wenn das 1:1 in CO2 umgewandelt würde, wären das 0,003 Prozent davon. Allerdings sind die Endprodukte der Verbrennung CO2 und Wasser. D.h. es sind weniger als diese 1.200 Tonnen, der Prozentsatz ist also noch geringer.

     Ich sehe das mit den konkurrierenden Konstellationen für die flächendeckende Internetversorgung auch kritisch. An sich ist die Idee sehr gut, brauchbares Internet mit einer vernünftigen Bandbreite per Satellit anzubieten. Das ist extrem wichtig insbesondere für Menschen, die nicht in urbanen Gegenden leben. Nur ist die Frage, ob man wirklich so viele konkurrierende Anbieter benötigt.

     Vieles, was ansonsten ins All geschossen wird, sind z.B. Erdbeobachtungssatelliten. So wurde die Tage ein Satellit ins All geschossen, der relativ genau erkennen kann, wo Methan austritt. Das wird massiv dabei helfen, solche Stellen zu finden und zu verschließen. Das hat dann auch recht schnell einen positiven Einfluss auf das Klima, schließlich bleibt Methan "nur" so um die 20 Jahre in der Atmosphäre.

     Es gibt natürlich auch viele Wetterbeobachtungen aus dem All. Das wiederum hilft auch direkt auf der Erde.

     As mentioned in the issue in the tracker, as there was no followup by the reporting persons after the fix was included in the RC code, we will assume that the problem has been solved and will proceed with the release procedure which the issue had blocked.

    I'm happy with my current workplace. It's a big corporation and has all the rigidity that comes with it, but for a big corporation there is a sincere and generally succesful ambition coming all the way from the top and supported from the bottom to value employees of all kinds, combine responsibilities with the influence to fulfill those responsibilites, provide reasonable salaries and provide excellent insurance and work-life balance.

    The one cultural trait in this company I can never get over is that everyone pronounces "PostgreSQL" "postgrey" rather than "postgres".

      @Becky I have two hypotheses for a mechanism, I believe both may be true and mutually reinforcing:

      - "saying the SQL seems unnecessary" (true) "so I'll just say the postgre" (incorrect, but understandable (yet still annoying))
      - "postgres looks French, I'll pronounce it in French" (especially as I work in a French company)

      Got an emergency alert about a radar indicated #tornado ... the storm cell appears to have past the Springfield #MO area. St Louis area also warned.
      
      No known damage in this area.
      
      There was some significant wind and rain for a few minutes. No hail observed. #GS3 was aware enough to be concerned about a tornado, but as far as I know, no twister touched the ground.

      Ja, Elon produziert massiv heiße Luft. Und auch beim Starship muss sich noch zeigen, ob es am Ende erfolgreich sein wird. Aber so oder so hat SpaceX eine Entwicklung angestoßen. So wird es bald z.B. die Neutron von Rocket Lab geben - eine wiederverwendbare Rakete eines anderen Herstellers. Auch Blue Origin - die Firma von Jeff Bezos - ist kurz davor, eine wiederverwendbare Rakete zu starten. D.h. so oder so wird es bald Standard sein, dass zumindest die Booster wiederverwendet werden. Ohne SpaceX hätte das wohl niemand gewagt. Das gleiche dürfte auch beim Starship passieren. Und in der Tat ist es meine Hoffnung, dass es nicht zu einem SpaceX-Monopol kommen wird.

    !Friendica Support I want to create a new functionality and I need some ideas. I want to add an option to contacts, so that their posts don't appear in the network timeline anymore. But in difference to "ignored", "collapsed" or "blocked" this has got no further consequences. It is meant especially for contacts that you want to aggregate in a dedicated channel. So for example you could decide to subscribe to a lot of news channels, but you don't want to see them in the network timeline, since they post that often. Instead you create a channel for them and browse them from time to time. Same could be an option for groups or for feeds.

    This filter would work for threads that are started by this special account. I would try to expand this to posts that are reshared by these accounts or by threads that are fetched, because this account commented in the thread. (The last two parts could be more challenging)

    My questions are:

    • Do you think that this is a good idea?
    • Could it be done better than an option on the contact page?
    • How could this be named, so that users don't misunderstand the functionality?

    The tyranny of politeness

    For car rides my partner uses Lyft in New York City, and when she travels for work in Texas she uses Uber because Lyft isn’t as prominent there. And while she has a spotless passenger record in Lyft, she has “only” an average of 4.3 stars in Uber, which is apparently enough in Texas to be rejected by drivers.

    She wasn’t sure of the reason behind this discrepancy until it hit her: she never engages in small talk with her drivers. And while in New York it is expected, even welcomed by drivers, it might earn you a bad mark in Texas where the US Southern fake friendliness is an unspoken social rule that can get you in trouble if you don’t abide by it.

    Do I need to point out that this fake friendliness reinforces the power dynamics already in favor of men, mostly white?

    Not sure who needs to hear that, but the concept of “An Eye for An Eye” was invented more than 3750 years ago at the latest. At the time it was an incremental improvement over even cruder justice systems. We’ve come a long way since.

      Beim letzten Test wurden ja wohl der Booster als auch der Orbiter im Flug gesprengt. Die Leute haben dann ganz schnell "deren Rakete ist schon wieder explodiert, das ist ein Fehlschlag!" gerufen, ohne zu wissen, was die Missionsziele waren.
