So putting a data center in Canada is enough effort for #facebook, they feel they should be exempted from having to do further efforts to protect users' #privacy...

What is your opinion about #Openbook?
Seems like a #Facebook alternative, but it is:
* centralized - they say they want to decentralize in the future and talk about #Solid from Tim Berners Lee (that's far from ready), but not #Activitypub.
* not clear which parts are open-source.
They claim to respect privacy, but I see no way how to check that.
I'm also wondering how they are going to be financed in the future. I see crowd-funding now, but they are specifically not non-profit, cause they want to keep the option open to raise money for future growth. In other words; they are looking for venture capital.
Facebook’s new move isn't about #privacy. It’s about #domination | #convergence #encryption #facebook #instagram #messaging #messenger #whatsapp https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/07/facebook-privacy-domination
Amazing how #facebook just leaks everyone's phone number and doesn't let you disable that. Perhaps they can learn from the privacy settings in #nextcloud? Not even talking of the fact that we keep data on your own server, of course...

For years Facebook claimed the adding a phone number for 2FA was only for security. Now it can be searched and there's no way to disable that.

#Facebook shared a vision about a #privacy. We applaud the idea & goals, with some skepticism.
Meanwhile, it will still be a single platform owned and controlled by a single player - #decentralization is a better way to keep data under control of users.
"Revealed: Facebook’s global lobbying against data privacy laws"
"Social network targeted legislators around the world, promising or threatening to withhold investment"
#Facebook should be broken up. They are too powerful, have no ethics or regard for society, and have no respect for law or sovereignty.
Some things that I have noticed since I quit #Facebook:
- My family still loves me and still talks to me
- Old friends from high-school still talk to me
- Old friends from college still talk to me
- I still meet new people
- I still make new friends
- I still shop at local businesses
- I'm still aware of events in my community
Huh, it's almost like I never needed Facebook in the first place.
