Hypolite Petovan (hypolite@friendica.mrpetovan.com)'s status on Friday, 15-Jan-2021 16:49:37 EST
Hypolite PetovanWith each new #Facebook scandal like the recent WhatsApp-related one, the #Fediverse welcomes a wave of new users and admins. #Friendica gets its tiny share of the newly converted to decentralized social media. Some stick, most don't, but there's always this one guy (it's always a man) whose first few messages on GitHub are to angrily complain that Friendica isn't user-friendly enough and that it is spelling doom for a project they didn't know the day before and for the #Fediverse as a whole.
This has been going on ever since I joined the project in 2016, and we're still here. 🤷♂️
I’ve always envied people with a visible group of friends having public interactions on social media.
However, I’ve never been one for direct interpersonal communication, I never initiate texts or emails, and social media has always been a way for me to be in contact with people without me having to specifically mention someone, or for them to specifically mention me.
And this runs exactly counter to my previously described longing. So today I wanted to mention people I really enjoy interacting with on here. I don’t expect any of them to be surprised by their mention here, but I still want to publicly acknowledge them.
In no particular order:
@Dash for their word plays, strong social justice sense and video game acumen.
@Spencer who’s basically me but better, especially the local organizing part I’m lacking.
@Brad Koehn who’s an all-around good guy, even if we don’t always agree politically.
@Beko Pharm for his dual-classing sword warrior/Indieweb priest.
@Anarkingu Gidora for his onslaught of pictures, half funny, half j-pop which I'm learning about without listening to a single song.
@:airforce: Airman Tilley who recently pivoted from tech startup employee/decentralized social media journalist to Air Force mechanic/video game developer but still is the same wholesome self.
[November 24th] I then found out that: - My daily backup didn't run since April 2019 because of a wrong file extension name in the configuration ("tar.lz" instead of expected "tar.lzma") - The domain name of the offsite server I used to send backups to isn't registered anymore
But worse...
My web host's basic backup FTP quota is 100 GB which would be insufficient for my complete backup even if it was working, and that 2.6 GB would have been taken by GoPro videos I took with my ex and hosted on a long-defunct personal website. 😓
Task list:
✅ Fix the backup configuration
✅ Start the DB server in read-only crash recovery mode, the only it will accept
✅ Delete the videos
✅ Perform a backup of the existing data state
✅ Empty the database and reimport the dataDoigts croisés
[November 26th] And we're back online after yet more adventures in a just-sized web server, unfortunately the direct upgrades (more memory, SSD) are unavailable at my current web host. I tried Hetzner but their entry-level offer is overkill for my needs.

Caution: this episode is over three hours long, so I have not listened (and will likely only listen to a fraction of it).
I wish @tio had also brought someone from #GNU_Social and someone from #Pleroma (and maybe @mike@loadaverage.org @mike@z.macgirvin.com to represent #Hubzilla and #Zap (and #Mistpark, #Redmatrix), and @dansup developer and project founder / leader of #PixelFed, and perhaps someone from #PeerTube, #Misskey, and so on). The other thing I wish had been done is to slice this far-too-long episode into four pieces, each an hour or less in length.
Sorry, Michael, I don't know whether you're officially the project leader, so I left that unsaid.
So last weekend we had our annual ~friendica #Hackathon, like every year over the last seven years. Which grew into a nice tradition to gather around a table, discuss things about #Friendica and spend some time hacking various problems and just have some fun.
Obviously this year was totally different. When the event in early autumn arrived just above the horizon, I just had six weeks of quarantine behind me with some really unpleasant memories to Covid-19 and the rest of the Berlin LUG https://gettogether.community/freaks/ was also in favor to not meet indoors this year. So we started to plan this event as online thing.
And it turned out to almost work like the meeting at K-9 or the E-LOK. Nice people gathered around a virtual table, some having on their video streams, some only their audio stream and some others "just" taking part in the textual chat. With the big advantage that parts of that table were located in various parts of Germany and Northern-America (if I missed some locations I'm utterly sorry) bringing more people together onto that table.
Thanks to everyone from the community who joined the Hackathon and made it to such a nice event warming up against the coldish, rainy weather that we got just in time here in #Berlin :-) <3 Happy hacking everyone!
And no, this is not the wrapping up blog posting, that will follow later :-)
The #Friendica Remote Hackathon 2020 has wrapped up, and I would like to extend my warmest thanks to @Tobias , @hoergen on Friendica and @Admin Istrator for organizing and animating this event, they made it super convenient for people like me to join and participate.
@clacke Can you describe how that AP "groups" server you use works? And post its URL? I think @heluecht is doing something similar for #Friendica, but it might be helpful to make sure everyone is thinking about similar ideas.
I don't understand a word (well, except loanwords and cognates).
So, for instance, they're talking about text strings and the [AP? Diaspora? DFRN?] protocol, and I understand those words, because they are the same as the English words.
