FramaGit is a free Git hosting alternative that doesn't suck.
@Framasoft are guys with good politics, and even though theirs is still a centralised server, and a self-hosted solution would be better (as long as you don't use MAGAFA servers or IP addresses) this is probably a second best option for small projects who don't know how to, or can't afford to handle their own Git web interface.

GitLab "Ultimate" and "Gold" for self hosting now free for education and open source.
This is GitLab taking this massive opportunity after Microshaft swallowed GitHub and making the best of it.
The more people are moving over now, the better their own future will be in the long run.
GitLab also make migration easier, starting the #movingtogitlab campaign with a straight-forward video etc.
GitLab is open source itself, too.

Happy to be #movingtoGitLab for now. Yes, I know about #IPFS and other decentralised options, and the risk of simply moving to yet another centralised business, but for the moment this is probably not a good choice for me because of (1) the extra work, (2) the loss of bells and whistles that #GitLab and #GitHub add on top of Git, (3) the fact that IPFS is still alpha, and (4 ) the requirement to still use something accessible for the wider public because I teach and interact with beginners.

If you're concerned about #Microsoft buying #GitHub (and you should be) please do not simply move to GitLab.com (the hosted #GitLab instance), it also runs on MS servers, (Azure) - always self-host GitLab, or if it's too heavy, go with Gitea.
Whatever you do, do not simply move from one silo to another.

Today's news of Microsoft purchasing Github pushed my butt into gear. Set up a self-hosted #Gitlab instance in 20 mins or so. Works perfectly, painless transition thus far.
#FLOSS only exists as it does today because it is susceptible to future capture by capital. Its freedom is predicated on future value. As #Telekommunisten pointed out ages ago, decentralization, GPL, and relentless copying are forks off of this path. There are others as well.
