@ster Not better. Worse. In fact, the only way to make it worse than it is, is to give people UUIDs as their handles. They didn't just obscure user accounts, they turned room addresses into impenetrable gobbledegook as well. Like many of their decisions, I wonder WTF the #Matrix people were thinking when they made those choices. @ragamuffinjim
If you're looking for a federated encrypted opensource messaging system, then please take a look at the #matrix protocol and it's different clients like #riot. They even release a video for news: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f6ZdmPSUUBA
That is a valid #UX concern, and if #IRC does work better with dial-up or patchy mobile than #XMPP or #Matrix in the same UI, that's a good argument for using IRC. What it's not is a convincing argument to use a 1990s IRC UI as a replacement for #Slack, instead of one of the many free code apps with a more #Slack-a-like UX https://www.coactivate.org/projects/disintermedia/slacking-off
@maloki here's the first feedback: I wouldn't want to join just for the reason of not using proprietary software when their is an alternative. #jitsi works great, same does #matrix @Loa
@RussSharek I haven't really looked into #Matrix at all. I should check it out. The issue with a lot of this stuff, for me, is that I don't have many techie friends so it all tends to be semi-useless due to a sort of reverse network effect.
@silkevicious I use !XMPP, #Wire, and #Matrix ( via the #Riot client ). I formerly tried #Ring (but after an update, I needed to reconnect to all my contacts) and #Tox ( a new ID on each device, so contacts never know how to reach you quickly ).
Who's active on #Matrix? We should work together! I'm putting together a group for positive channels (as an alternative to some of the main channels run by fascist-enablers). Still working on a CoC and whatnot. #matrixorg
Imagining a world where #Matrix has become the standard for most communication systems and #ActivityPub is central to all publication/expression platforms. Everyone is familiar again with the concept of localpart and provider domain, the idea of global usernames or even phone numbers is now a distant ghost. A distributed and privacy-friendly discovery system exists across those platforms. Content producers are either supported globally or retributed through the various federations. It is 2025.
@bob #Wire has promised to implement federation (which is why I was willing to try it). For most of my uses (1:1 or small group chats), it blows #Matrix (via Riot Web, Riot Android, Riot iOS) out of the water.
IMO, at its current stage of development, Matrix/Riot is not suitable for nontechnical users, but I actually have family members communicating with me on Wire.
@bob @buttle I have around 5 encrypted #Riot / #Matrix chats that we're not using much anymore. Most of the time, #Wire does what I wanted, without the frustration. . I'm told it is better now, but I've seen some of the annoyances less than a week ago.
