    @strypey Between November and February. Some change required us all to reconnect as contacts. Reconnecting never completed, so communication over #Ring was no longer possible.

    @david_ross the #NextCloudTalk announcement mentioned they intend to build in bridges to #XMPP (and maybe #Matrix) in future releases, so maybe being able to join #WebRTC chats from a desktop client is on the horizon

    They're talking about[0] splitting #Fractal into a Messenger app and a Discussions app. I think having different user experiences for those two use cases makes a lot of sense, but I don't know that it requires splitting it into two apps. But maybe it would make it easier to accommodate the changes necessary.

    @drbjork If you value, Free Software, decentral, independent, federated, then #XMPP and #Matrix are probably the best options. Although I would give XMPP more points in the category "independent". #Briar might be interesting in the future as well.

    @gordon @duchesse LDAP is a bit of a mess in Matrix currently; we don't use it in the core team, and meanwhile the LDAP plugin for synapse is a bit simplistic. However: https://github.com/matrix-org/matrix-synapse-ldap3/blob/master/ldap_auth_provider.py#L94-L140 is where you'd put in a check to let non-LDAP usernames register. Alternatively try asking on #matrix-identity:matrix.org; it's possible mxisd could also be a solution.

    Positives: For 1:1 chats, it is vastly superior to #Matrix. I believe E2E encrypted by default.

    Negatives: Contact list management is still not good, and the promised #federation has not yet appeared. I eventually want to !selfhost my communications infrastructure, or at least anything that isn't #P2P.

    - do you rely on a centralized service
    - telegram runs on proprietary software
    - it can't federate and creates by that something known as 'walled gargen'
    - there are great alternatives you might like

    Government of France: Matrix / Riot confirmed as the basis for upcoming official secure messenger.

    "France has confirmed it is in the process of deploying a huge private federation of Matrix homeservers spanning the whole government, and developing a fork of Riot.im for use as their official secure communications client!

    The goal is to replace usage of WhatsApp or Telegram for official purposes."
