@Are0h the moderation team decided that trump support is not allowed on the forums because the administration’s values stand in crass contrast to the values they run their community on, so it can’t be treated as a matter where political neutrality is viable. and they seem to apply that rule hard.

@Are0h their commitment to finding bad solutions to things that weren’t a problem is downright astounding.

meanwhile, the forums still got it. you seen those rpg.net news?

@Rewhan this reminds me so so much of the hands-on community maintenance work that forums and IRC channels were doing, and that we’re dreadfully missing in the corporate-owned spaces that took their place. now, we get ‘hey, if we remove the like button, people can no longer like nazi stuff on our site, problem solved!’ because it doesn’t impact their bottom line.

@caraellison same. back when i was younger, it was for ‘we could be exploring the galaxy and use all this amazing tech!’ then it was for ‘we could’ve done away with the need for work to finance survival. also, perfectly brewed tea without waiting for the kettle to boil’ and now ‘imagine if humane, competent people were in charge and all co-workers were caring.’

@frostotron @switchingsocial that’s for gog galaxy, their steam client equivalent, isn’t it? i have to admit that didn’t impact me yet, because i just download the games and don’t care much for multiplayer or achievements, but if its role is to become more central eventually, it’d be one more reason not to buy at GOG.

it’s a shame how much that needlessly thins out the places one can just buy games. GOG are such masters at unforced errors.

@bobstechsite fwiw, mint passed the test of my completely non-techy father.

after bricking his laptop, i gave him a live boot medium so he can access/backup his data & use the computer until i get time to reinstall his windows. a few days later, he asks whether we could install this linux instead. i tell him yes, there should be an install icon. 2 days later, he installed it all by himself, despite never having even installed a program on his windows box.

@Gargron we also came up with shield toad, which is friggin’ genius!

@Are0h kinda late, but what i found really helpful for documentation is this here: https://www.divio.com/blog/documentation/ (author name + pycon on yt also yields a talk on the matter, if video is preferable) – dividing all of documentation into these 4 subsections with their purposes saved me from writing too much of a mess.

@Are0h having recently published my first python package (albeit a very small one): relatable, on both counts. :)

i knew i could handle the meat & bones of what it was supposed to do. but then it never stopped confronting me with new and nontrivial decisions to make, so it would end up being actually useable. (also, my pre-existing respect for well written documentation increased even more)

@Are0h i watched gary bernhardt’s practise run for his screencast on how to build a text editor from scratch. as with everything in that series: building things we take for granted (editor, compiler, malloc, …) is surprisingly doable. but building even the most trivial tool to be production-ready is HARD WORK.

@nico oh i see. i was just about to break into a monologue why non-cult-y introductory exercise stuff is a surprisingly tall order. (i totally relate to disjointed thoughts)

and i’m hoping that what’s driving this recent wave of opposing the course of things is mostly a dying generation’s last ‘get off my lawn’, and that they can’t ruin things too permanently before their influence becomes insignificant.
