@noelle @typhlosion @alice you have to see it in context: "build/do it yourself" kits and products have been around since ages, and they seem incredibly popular in japan, so people are willing to pay a bunch of money for that kind of thing there, see gakken kits and lotsa stuff

a lot of things nintendo does are pretty japan-centric, and this is just something they found marketable outside of japan

also, proprietary? it's cardboard, and the game coming with it is as proprietary as any other cart

@007 there's plenty more examples, but there's a LOT of ways in which things can become quite literally stuck (can't reach a remote server with required information, server application entered an infinite loop and can't process any more requests, server app stuck on processing a complicated request, extremely high IO demand on disk making processes stop running for seconds every single time they write a bit of data to a file...)

@007 if a disk is full it might prevent new writes, stopping certain stuff from working

@masklayer as fingers sez, the appeal is the visceral nature of it, and I think one other nice thing about it is the unpredictabilit

with digital, you have instant feedback and can retake the photo if needed

with film, you newer know what you get, framing or exposure may be off so every photo is a risk, and it takes a long time for it to get developed

you may make something beautiful or something bad, but unlike digital, this needn't concern you, you focus on capturing the moment

ui/ux makes one hell of a difference with messaging services

something i'd wish to see from the telegram project, though, is an open backend, so people can run their own networks

failing that, a third party oss alternative would be neat, at least the clients are open source and the proto documented
