@suzaneraslan Hypothetically someone could maybe have a personal collection of gold watches or diamond rings, where it could be argued that those things also had some personal use value.
Long story short; my abusive mother is trying to throw me and my enbyfriend out. It’s probably going to happen soon. We’re both disabled, my enbyfriend is an EU citizen and we have no real income so we don’t have concrete entitlements or access to housing.
If you can help... - Donate to Mutant Standard. The more money, the more options we have. - If you’re in the UK and have a spare room, we are capable of paying our fair share of any bills.
No one “needs” as much clothing or books or tools as I enjoy being able to access, but what if EVERYONE had access to it instead of just me? And why shouldn’t they? Why should we envision a world where people are still wearing 1 Hermès tie with 1,000 sitting at home when everyone who wants to could wear one everyday? There is more than enough luxury stuff in the world to go around— let everyone share in the silk and the cashmere and perfume. MAKE everyone share it.
capitalists: it's up to consumers to make sure they're not buying goods that damage workers or the environment. me: [spending ages looking up corporate supply chains] Can't there just be laws?
@vfrmedia @oliveruv @cobaltvelvet Yes, that's always one way of keeping people on side. In the past things like packet filtering systems were just bought from Europe or the US, but I expect that's diminishing now. Especially in Iran post-Stuxnet I expect the regime will prefer to cultivate home grown talent.
@neothethird @matrix @ubports Yes, within 2017 Matrix became commonly used and afaik the end-to-end encryption is good. The main down side to Matrix is no metadata protection, so if you were using it in Iran on a local homeserver your family and friends are still going to be rounded up after the protest.
@cobaltvelvet It might be possible to use Tor within Iran, especially if you know some bridges. But Signal can't be used inside of Iran. It might be possible to transparent proxy Signal through Orbot, but that's probably beyond what most users are going to think of, even if Orbot is downloadable.
I accidentally created a mult-user chatroom on XMPP, it's fediverse@conference.neko.im and then people from fediverse started joining so... I guess you could join too if you use XMPP and are bored
@maiyannah @vfrmedia I don't particularly remember rapes being given as a reason why there was suppression of raves, although I was never a reader of the Daily Mail so maybe I missed that part.
@vfrmedia I vaguely remember the great fear of raves from the mid 1990s. Maybe some of that was related to the drug war, but mostly it seemed to me that the older generation were just afraid of young people getting together and having fun, outside of highly controlled and formal contexts.
