Seeking ranty, opinionated, bitchy and/or old programmers to be my friend. Spread the word. Please. I'm so lonely.

@aemon Especially when I was a kid, the BBC was marketed as an "independent broadcaster", but even back then the cozy relationship between the government and the BBC was satirized in comedy. As far as I know the BBC is still ultimately governed by the BBC Trust, and the BBC Trust is appointed by "queen in council". In practice this means that the government gives the monarch a list of candidates to choose from. They often seem to be bankers or people with connections to the aristocracy.

@aemon I think it was. I very dimly and vaguely remembered what appeared on TV about the miners strike in the mid 1980s, the really biased reporting by newsnight about travelers and the poll tax. There were numerous other examples, like the way there was never any serious criticism of the monarchy but perhaps the pinnacle was the run up to the 2003 Iraq war, where they were really just saying what the government wanted them to and as soon as they started going off-script even slightly the director was replaced. And then there's the 2010 student protests. The BBC bias there was so obvious it was the kind of cynical propaganda that you'd expect from the lowest budget tinpot regime.

@cosine wikipedia wasn't supposed to be written by experts, that's scholarpedia. It's usually ok as a first pass, but wikipedia has had problems with bots and campers for a long while. This means that the wisdom of crowds effect may not necessarily hold and an article may be biased because a self-declared expert is camping upon it.

As someone whose first experience with computers was a SWTP 6800, the amount of capability packed into a $3 ESP8266 is surreal.

@kaniini With IP blocking there's a basic fail in that the IP address may indicate nothing about where the post originated. This suthenticity problem exists with all the mainstream media reporting about fake news and such. Claims about information originating from a certain geographical location may themselves be fake.

@pho4cexa I have a gps gadget, and don't use a phone for that. For street navigation I use osmand. I don't use shared calendars, but if I did I'd probably use nextcloud or hubzilla for that.

Friendly reminder. Full disk encryption on a server you have no physical access to grants you no security, same for your laptop if you carry it around in sleep mode. FDE protects your data at rest as from a cold boot you need to provide the passphrase. If your box is running the secret is present in memory and can be grabbed by a dedicated attacker.

For the same reason, when approaching border control, TURN OFF your phone, just locking the screen is often not enough.

@lnxw48a1 In a sane world the defaults of Twitter or Facebook would be in the best interests of users. But users are not their customers.
