@hellojed Competitive consumerism is the worst. If you find yourself doing it then consider where the idea comes from and who is really benefiting from it. -

Social Networking, powered by FreeSoftware
Most people think about the big American data silos when talking about social networking. But there is a world outside these silos, where FreeSoftware empowers the networking of people and organisations.
In this talk I would like to show you a glimpse of this world, what advantages it offers and how it can be used to reach even those entangled in the siloes.
It is a one hour slot, that will most likely not be filled completely with the talk. Afterwards should be time and space in the hall for a get together of the decentralized federal social network users.

@dhasenan If I were the NSA then modifying those types of downloads via quantum insert would be an obvious way to attack systems. So checking hashes to at least make sure they're consistent is a good idea. -

@dhasenan For the jquery stuff I download the relevant version, check its hash to make sure nothing else was added or removed then replace the link. -

@sikkdays Links to Google fonts are especially common, but also jquery. Google must get a ton of user behavior information this way. -

Battling the evil googleapi once more. Sigh.
Please, web devs, don't make your apps phone home to The Goog all the time. -

@aral Complaining about Signal and the strange/arbitrary decisions of Moxie became a standard fixture in the fediverse long before Mastodon turned up. -

Most of the web is now unreadable on mobile without disabling JS and without reader view
This wasn’t the accessible, semantic web I was promised in the early 2000s. It’s like everyone fell over themselves to severe ads and forgot what content was

@srol I would advise people to follow anyone who seems interesting, whether you know them -- or even know of them -- or not. I've found some amazing people here, simply through one of their off-hand random posts. Add people shamelessly and fearlessly. You can always stop following them later, if they turn out to be turnip heads.

@bumbar I expect that within a few years there might be something like an affordable open hardware system. There are various existing systems, like Novena or the Talos thing, but they're very expensive.
When I bought my current laptop a couple of years ago there wasn't really a practical option other than Intel. Maybe after the recent ME scandals they will drop ME or have a hardware disable switch, but that's a BIG maybe and I'm not expecting them to do that. Instead I'm expecting them to go down the AMD route and embed the backdoor right into the CPU.
